The sculpture, the work of artist Sigalit Landau, an interdisciplinary artist who creates in installation, video, photography, and sculpture, is made of bronze and was created using a wax mold into which the metal was cast.
The plaque engraved on the marble column on which the statue stands reads a quote from the president's words: "In the home of my father and mother, I breathed the human spirit. I absorbed the Jewish tradition, the glory and the challenge of Jabotinsky, but above all, I learned to listen. I learned to respect the faith of others, and I learned to recognize their pain. At home, I learned that without the ability to listen, the ability to learn is prevented, and without the ability to learn, the possibility of correction is prevented.""
Rivlin thanked Sigalit for the creation and said: "Sigalit Landau is a unique artist, world-renowned. Nechama described her works to me in detail, for example the watermelon display in the Dead Sea, or the wedding dress, also made of salt, which was displayed in the Tower of David. I can only be proud that I was privileged to have my face designed and built by her hands. Thank you, Sigalit, for being so gentle, kind and full of humor during the creative process.".
Sigalit Landau: "Over the past year, I have been delighted to be a sculptor who is like a craftswoman who receives an official invitation - to capture a person's personality in material. To immortalize the facial features of Honorable President Reuven Rivlin, a portrait whose purpose is to be placed on a state stage.""
Sigalit spoke about the creative process: "At the beginning of the journey, we held a meeting at the President's House, where I drew and photographed the President's face and shoulders from many perspectives and angles with my partner, Yotam Fromm. Afterwards, equipped with the drawings and photographs that we printed, as usual, I headed to the welding table. That's where I start all my sculptures. Using a first mold, I moved on to sculpt the portrait in more detail in wax, and after quite a bit of work, we went up to Jerusalem to examine the result in the context of the garden.
""I enjoyed getting to know the president and his team up close. I enjoyed the challenging process. I am an expressive sculptor without much experience in sculpting portraits, but without giving up my sculptural language, I created a portrait that has something of the joy of life and the radiant and endearing personality of the outgoing President Reuven (Rubi) Rivlin.""
