At the end of the meeting, Kahane said: "We agreed to advance the election process for the rabbi of Tel Aviv-Yafo.".

Since 2017, when Rabbi Israel Meir Lau retired after turning 80, the city has been left without a chief rabbi.

The Chief Rabbinate of Israel has appointed supervisors in the field of kashrut and marriage registration.

""The situation in which the city of Tel Aviv-Yafo has been without a city rabbi for five years is unacceptable. In my opinion, the city rabbi has great significance in leading religious services and providing a spiritual response to the city's residents," said the minister.

Tel Aviv-Jaffa Mayor Ron Huldai: "The city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa has been functioning for five years without a chief rabbi - and the sky has not fallen. I personally believe in the saying 'make yourself a rabbi,' and not necessarily in appointing a chief municipal rabbi. But this is the law in the State of Israel - and of course we will act accordingly.""

Earlier, the minister toured the Tel Aviv Religious Council and heard an overview from the council's chairman, Eldad Mizrahi. Mizrahi noted that in Tel Aviv, approximately 3,000 couples register for marriage each year, and the Religious Council provides kosher services to over 1,000 businesses.

In addition, the Religious Council operates a special court for property law that has earned a good reputation as one of the best arbitration institutions, and its gates are used by religious and non-religious citizens. Mizrahi presented to the minister the system of eruvin and mikvahs and the system of Torah classes operating in over 450 synagogues and community centers.

The minister said: "I was very impressed by the extensive activity of the Religious Council in Tel Aviv, under the direction of Eldad Mizrahi. I was happy to meet at the marriage registrar couples who are satisfied with the wonderful service you provide here. The couples' positive experience from the meeting with the Religious Council leads to the sanctification of the name of the Lord.

The issue of appointing a rabbi for the city of Tel Aviv-Jaffa was discussed, and Mizrahi said: "I am prepared to help advance the process of elections for the city rabbinate. The issue has been on the table for a long time and we are prepared to help establish the body that elects the city rabbi.".

The Minister of Religious Services said that he sees great importance in appointing a rabbi for the city of Tel Aviv-Yafo, as the elected rabbi will serve as a member of the Council of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel.
