In a speech he delivered this evening (Monday) in the Knesset plenum, MK Uri Maklev attacked Minister of Religious Services Matan Kahane for what he called the "tract of lies" that he had presented earlier in the plenum.
Who misses out on something like that? Scholarships, a job opportunity, and a prestigious degree.
Why is this important? These are the most unexpected things that happen to beachgoers
Why are there some ultra-Orthodox people looking for such strange destinations abroad?
""Unfortunately, the Minister of Religious Affairs presented here to the members of the Knesset a tract of lies and falsehoods that do not correspond with the reality on the ground, they interpret Jewish identity differently from us," said Maklev. "Here stands the Minister of Religious Affairs, who is a member of the Prime Minister's party that deceived his electorate in the past year - and expects us to believe them, because they will protect what is sacred and precious to the people of Israel.".
Maklev continued: "'He who wants to lie will have his testimony removed.' We all saw how the mayor of Harish tried to bring in a bylaw permitting commerce on Shabbat, but we fought against it, exposed the truth, and even senior jurists that you appreciate and cherish determined that the law he is trying to pass is the opposite of observing Shabbat. Is this the kind of Shabbat you want in this country?
""This motion of no confidence sharpens this issue - is this called a Jewish state? On what will this state be based as a Jewish state if not on observing the Sabbath, on kashrut, on marriage and divorce according to Halacha.".
""Even if there is a group of rabbis who present a false representation, go around universities and try to present a different Judaism, which they claim is more enlightening, but none of this helps them, we go around the country every week, we meet with the public, they are disconnected from the field. The public in the country wants authentic, rooted Judaism, which has been handed down to us for generations.".
""How much of an uptick is there in marriage registration, how much of an awakening is there in strict adherence to kashrut? There is no city where there is no awakening. I was recently in the city of Herzliya. We saw a huge awakening there. On the main street, almost every store has a kashrut certificate - this is the reality they are trying to hide.".
Maklev presented to the Knesset members the letter from the great men of Israel, including Rabbi Shimon Adani, who came out against the mayor of Harish: "We will continue to expose this lie," said Maklev. "These things are at the heart of the character of the country. People who claim to be people of faith are pulling out their claws in an attempt to say, 'I am kosher.' We do not recognize compromises or concessions in things that are sacred and precious to us. They bring this from the Reform synagogue. We have no compromises.".
He emphasized: "The majority of the public wants real marriages and divorces, not fake ones. The public wants kosher, but you are deceiving the public. This is our right to exist as a country - nothing else will bring us our right to exist in this country.".
MK Maklev told the Knesset members: "Once I blushed in the plenary. One of the Yesh Atid MKs came up to the Knesset podium and spoke about the right of the Jewish people to exist in the Land of Israel, and brought as evidence the giving of the Torah and the Holy Torah. One of the MKs from the Arab factions turned to him and said: 'But you yourself do not fulfill everything that is written in the Torah, how do you demand the Land of Israel next to you?'.
""Our entire connection to the Land of Israel is the observance of the commandments according to the tradition passed down from father to son. This is our framework and it cannot be broken. Undermining the status quo undermines our entire right to exist here in the land.".
