The Israeli Defense Ministry's Air Defense Command, together with Elbit Systems in cooperation with the Air Force, intercepted drones at various ranges and flight altitudes using an airborne laser system installed on an aircraft. The series of experiments was conducted under the leadership of the Research and Development (R&D) unit at the Israeli Defense Ministry. An aircraft on which a prototype of a laser system was installed intercepted and destroyed - in a number of different scenarios - drones at various ranges and flight altitudes.

The ability to destroy aerial threats, including drones, from the air is an innovative capability that has the potential to bring about a strategic change in the State of Israel's air defense capabilities.

The groundbreaking experiments, which have not yet been carried out in the State of Israel, were carried out at a test field in the center of the country in close cooperation with the Air Force and the IAF unit.

Israel is among the first countries in the world to have succeeded in maturing laser technology into an airborne system and demonstrating interception in an operational scenario.

This series of experiments is the first phase of a multi-year experimental program by the Israeli Defense Forces and Elbit Systems to develop an airborne laser system to deal with aerial threats and threats of long-range, high-power runways.

Interception using a powerful airborne laser has many advantages, including a cost of a few dollars per interception, the ability to intercept threats from very long ranges while operating at high altitude and without weather restrictions, and providing a protective envelope over large areas.

The aerial laser system will complement Israel's multi-layered defense system, which includes the Iron Dome, Magic Wand, and Arrow systems.

The system will increase the effectiveness of defense against existing and expected threats in the arena.

Head of R&D at the Israeli Defense Forces, Brigadier General Yaniv Rotem: "The Israeli Defense Forces and Elbit, in cooperation with the Air Force, are currently completing a series of airborne laser development trials. We have succeeded in aerially intercepting several UAVs at a range of over a kilometer. This is a groundbreaking technological achievement, which constitutes a critical step for continued development.".

Elbit Intelligence Systems CEO Oren Sabag: "We are proud to lead, together with the Israel Defense Forces and the Air Force, the development of this strategic capability. The technological breakthrough demonstrated in the series of experiments is based on unique technological assets on a global scale in the fields of electro-optics, and integrated ground and air laser systems, such as Magen Rekia and others."
