Pfizer issued a statement today (Monday) stating that there is no proof that the vaccine is effective beyond 21 days after the first dose - if the second dose is not received on time.

The announcement was made after the European Union requested an amendment to the documents submitted by Pfizer to allow the second dose to be given 42 days after the first, but Pfizer clarified that they do not have data proving efficacy in such a situation.

""The safety and efficacy of the vaccine were not evaluated in the dosing schedules because most trial participants received the second vaccine within the timeframe initially set in the study," the company said, noting that the recommended time between vaccinations is up to 21 days.

Germany also announced today that due to the shortage of vaccines, it is considering delaying the administration of the second injection, in order to reach a situation where large parts of the population will be vaccinated with at least one dose.

Britain is currently planning a similar move. In Denmark, a six-week delay has been decided between the first and second shots of the vaccine.

In the United States, however, they are considering vaccinating the population with Moderna's vaccine at half the usual dose in each shot. This move is intended to double the amount of vaccines available.
