Eliyahu Cohen, a resident of District 9 in Ashdod, a student at Nahalat David Yeshiva in the Har Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem, was arrested by military police because he failed to report to the 'first order' sent to his home.

On Monday night, the yeshiva student left with his family from a family event in the city of Elad. His father was driving the car. Police officers, who set up a police checkpoint at the exit from the city to search for Shabachim, took the details of all the passengers in the car, and when they reached the young man, they discovered that he was 'wanted for questioning' by the police.

He is currently staying in the military prison, awaiting a military trial to which he will likely be brought in the coming days.

His family does not belong to the Karlenstein Haredi community in Ashdod, but lives in District 9, and therefore it is unclear why he decided not to report to the draft office, and whether this was the instruction he received from his yeshiva rabbis.

Either way, activists from the Committee to Save the World of Torah and lawyers are handling his case. He may be arrested on Seder night. If so, demonstrations across the country are expected.
