Iran's Revolutionary Guards managed to penetrate the private computer of the former IDF Chief of Staff, journalist Alon Ben-David reported this evening on Channel 10.
According to the report, during the attack, which took place last year, Iran attacked dozens of computers belonging to Israelis, most of them senior security officials, and extracted information from the computers, but the overall extent of the damage is still unclear.
In recent years, Iran has begun to brag about having the capabilities of a cyber power and is undoubtedly striving to improve in this regard.
Over the past year, it has infiltrated the computers of 1,800 people, including hundreds of Israelis, mainly past and present senior officers.
The source of the intrusion into the former Chief of Staff's computer became clear after the Iranian attacker, a man named Yasser Balahi, was careless and accidentally left his email address - which allowed Israeli security personnel to determine his identity.
Balahi admitted that he did not act on his own initiative, "but on the advice of another cyber organization, which commissioned the work," said Ron Davidson, head of intelligence and research at Check Point.
According to the report, the Iranians realized a few months ago that the infiltration operation had been exposed. However, although the operation was stopped, they had managed to extract information from the computer hack in the meantime.
