After obtaining the ten signatures necessary to submit her candidacy, former Knesset member Dalia Itzik officially announced her candidacy for the presidency this morning (Monday).
""After 64 years and nine presidents, the time has come for a woman to take over," her office said in a statement. "I am putting myself forward for election out of respect and full belief that I will fulfill this high position in a way that will bring pride to the people of Israel. Everything I have done throughout my life, from the days when I was a teacher in Jerusalem, through positions in the Knesset, the government and the cabinet, to the position of Speaker of the Knesset - has qualified me for the position.".
""If elected," Itzik added, "I will be an accessible president, with a goal of uniting the people, and emphasizing education, reducing gaps and equal opportunities - issues that I have worked on throughout my years of public service. I believe that the members of the Knesset will convey a clear message that in the Israel of 2014, the position of president of the state is also open to women, and they will place their trust in me.".
A Channel 2 poll published last Friday on the Ulpan Shishi program placed her in last place in the race for the position, with public support of only 21%.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) is the deadline for submitting candidacies for the presidency of the country.
Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry, Prof. Dan Shechtman, who obtained the ten signatures required to submit his candidacy, is also expected to announce his candidacy.
In a Channel 2 poll, Shechtman received 191% of support and came in second place after Reuven Rivlin, who is considered the candidate with the greatest chances.
Retired Supreme Court Justice Dalia Dorner will also run for president. Dorner completed the collection of the 10 signatures required to file her candidacy this morning (Monday). The list of signatories was completed for her this morning by MK Pnina Tamano Sheta of Mish Atid.
