Israeli information security company Check Point announced this evening (Tuesday) that it has uncovered a serious security breach in the desktop platform of the popular WhatsApp application - which could affect 200 million users worldwide.
After the breach was discovered, Check Point reported to WhatsApp the security breach, which is centered on the computer interface, which is gaining popularity among users who run the software on their personal computers.
WhatsApp has verified and confirmed the security issue and released a patch for the computer platform worldwide last week. To ensure you are protected, you should update your existing version.
According to WhatsApp, 900 million people use the popular software, of which about 200 million use the new computer interface.
Kasif Dekel, a researcher at Check Point who discovered the security breach, explains that the breach allows attackers to run malicious code on users' machines by sending a 'contact' file containing the code.
""This code can be used to distribute malware such as Trojan horses, spyware, and other malware. All the attacker needs is the user's phone number. This weakness opens up a huge world of opportunities for hackers around the world," said Dekel.
