""The most serious cyber breaches of recent years": The National Cyber Unit at Lahav 433 arrested two suspects, Israeli residents, today (Tuesday), after a joint investigation with American authorities gathered evidence of their alleged involvement in carrying out a stock scam on the American stock exchange, in what is defined as one of the 'serious cyber scams.'.
The affair began more than a decade ago, when the suspects - four in number - met at the University of Florida and decided to hack into the computers of JP Morgan Bank and other financial institutions, stealing the details of more than 80 million customers.
Two of the detainees were captured by police in Israel and two others were arrested in Florida.
According to the report, a fifth suspect involved in the case has not yet been arrested. Authorities attribute the suspects to cross-continental cooperation that effectively constituted an international cybercrime organization.
Bloomberg News reported that the virtual and criminal connection that linked those involved moved between Moscow, Tel Aviv, and Palm Beach, Florida.
The police issued the following statement: As part of the cooperation between the authorities and in light of the evidentiary infrastructure that the cyber unit at Lahav 433 and the FBI have developed in the joint investigation, an arrest request has been submitted by the American authorities for the purpose of extradition of the Israeli suspects to the US, and this is being handled under the leadership of the International Department at the Attorney General's Office and with the assistance of the Intelligence Division at the Israel Police.
In recent days, as part of the investigation, more than ten representatives of American law enforcement agencies have been in Israel and are operating in the unit's facilities, together with officers from the National Cyber Unit at Lahav 433 and accompanied by the International Department at the State Attorney's Office, with overall operational coordination being carried out in the unit's situation room.
Tomorrow, at around 9:00 AM, a hearing will be held at the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on the request of the International Department of the State Attorney's Office to extend the suspects' detention - for the purpose of their extradition.
