According to the Education Ministry's plan that was revealed, the minister, Rabbi Shai Piron, plans to start Holocaust studies from an early age - in kindergarten.
This coming Monday will be Holocaust Memorial Day.
Critics of the program believe that it is inappropriate to teach such difficult subjects at an early age, but the Ministry of Education, which organized the program in collaboration with Yad Vashem, believes that this is a necessity, as the children are already exposed to the subject due to the sirens and the rituals that accompany the day.
The program, ranging from two to 15 hours per year - depending on the age group - will be part of the current curriculum as part of history studies in grades 11-12.
The statement from the ministry and Yad Vashem reads: "The program was formulated by a joint committee of the Ministry of Education and Yad Vashem's International School for Holocaust Education, which included experts in the field of Holocaust education, educational psychological teams, and educational consultants.".
According to them, the outline will adapt itself to the age groups, "in accordance with the children's emotional and cognitive ability to deal with the topic and its meaning.".
