Airports Authority Director General Sharon Kedmi said today (Thursday) on the B network that between two and three million Israelis are expected to receive notice during the summer that their flights have been canceled.
The reason: American activity at Ben Gurion Airport.
According to Kedmi, 70 percent of activity at Ben Gurion Airport is limited due to American military activity at the airport. "We are only utilizing a third of the airport's operational capacity. We are at the limit of our capabilities. There will be flights that we will announce in the coming days that are being canceled, and companies will not be able to return at the pace they want. There will also be delays in takeoffs from abroad.".
The CEO revealed that in the past two months, the authority has lost more than 700 million shekels. "As long as the situation continues, the authority will lose billions. We do not rely on the state budget. We rely on our own budget and our revenues, which are currently decreasing.".
Kedmi noted that this year they planned for 18 million passengers to pass through the airport. In the original plan, the target was 22 million and was reduced because of the war. "Right now it looks like we won't exceed 15 million. We have no information on when the US military's activities at the airport will end.".
There are dozens of refueling planes at Ben Gurion Airport, parked in three areas. The dozens of refueling planes are not expected to leave Israel at this stage.
