A particularly dramatic change is about to revolutionize payments on public transportation in Israel: the company 'Egged' is joining the movement to pay with credit cards on buses and is opening the first pilot in three cities - Eilat, Jerusalem and Haifa.
According to the report on the Ynet website, the service, which already exists in many countries around the world, began this week in Eilat and will be expanded to the Haifa metropolitan area and Jerusalem starting this Sunday - and as part of it, you can pay with credit cards on the bus, without the need for a Rav-Kav card or any app.
In fact, passengers in these three cities on Egged buses will now be able to pay at the validation devices using a physical credit card or a digital wallet such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, from their mobile phone or smartwatch.
The move is intended to make it easier for occasional passengers on public transportation, mainly tourists or older people who have difficulty paying for public transportation, as many of them do not have an appropriate app or a Rav Kav card.
The association emphasizes that this is a pilot project that will be tested in the coming months, and if it is successful, it may be expanded to other regions of the country.
Public transportation in Israel has undergone far-reaching changes in recent years with regard to payments: If in the past it was possible to pay in cash, today there is no such option, and in order to board buses in Israel, it is mandatory to have a Rav Kav card or a payment app.
