Hundreds of secular young people, including dozens of Meretz Jerusalem activists, arrived on Saturday at the Barud restaurant in Feingold Courtyard, which is open on Saturday, to protect it from a demonstration by fanatics.
According to Meretz, "a group of religious fanatics who passed by the restaurant and approached it - turned back due to the presence of Meretz activists and the free public.".
The fanatics have recently come every week to protest against the Barod restaurant, which is open on Saturdays.
The chairwoman of the Meretz list for the city council, Laura Wharton, posted on her Facebook page over the weekend a call for Jerusalemites to come to Barud and defend the restaurant. "The charming restaurant suffers from harassment by fanatics who come every Shabbat to harass and yell at the staff and those who come to the place," Wharton wrote. "Freedom in the city is in real danger and we must protect it. This is our place to mobilize, Jerusalemites, and we can help.".
""We have seen similar attempts to harm businesses and entertainment venues open on Shabbat at the Bezalel Cafe, Diners Restaurant, and more, but the zealots failed because we united against them and stood firm," Wharton wrote.
She added, proudly: "You can always count on Meretz Jerusalem. We can't let bullying win.".
