The chairman of the United Torah Judaism faction, MK Menachem Eliezer Mozes, spoke in the Knesset plenary and exclaimed: "We can no longer tolerate the desecrations of the Sabbath that occur under the auspices of the state, from Sabbath to Sabbath.".
Moses continued painfully: "Every Sunday we wake up anew and hear with pain about the desecrations of the Sabbath committed by Israel Railways, or by the Electric Company, or on Route 6. We received the Sabbath as a gift to the Jewish people. Jews throughout all generations have given their lives for the Sabbath, and there are many stories of the heroism of Jews in the Holocaust and other terrible times for the sake of keeping the Sabbath.
""And here, in the Jewish state, every Sabbath night they are informed of the desecration of the Sabbath anew, while employing Jews at an extraordinary salary of up to 300%-400%! And what is worse is the hidden lie, when each minister shifts the responsibility to another minister. The Minister of Transportation shifts it to the Minister of Labor, and the Ministry of Labor accuses the Israel Police of forcing them to perform work out of concern for their lives. These shifts of responsibility are a joke on the public! We can no longer accept this!""
Moses continued: "Only a few weeks ago we approved the law we initiated here, the 'Israeli Tradition' law, and despite that, what happens happens and the desecration of the Sabbath continues every week.
""Around the world, where Shabbat is not observed and traffic flows 7 days a week, they are also forced to carry out repairs. There too, they are upgrading. There too, they are strengthening. And look, it's a miracle, they do this without closing roads and without a day of rest. They develop roads as part of their daily routine. Why can't the Jewish state do the same thing while observing Shabbat and preventing desecration?""
Mozes further said that the United Torah Judaism faction expects the Prime Minister, with all his security and political concerns, to give heed and implement what is stated in the coalition agreement between us - "and the right to the Sabbath will protect us and the entire Jewish people.".
