The IDF announced today (Monday) the appointment of Colonel Raviv Shemer as the new commander of the Haredi Hasmonean Brigade.
Raviv Shemer grew up in the town of Kedumim in Samaria and studied at the 'Ezem' pre-military preparatory school. He enlisted in the IDF in 2005 in the Paratrooper Brigade and completed a combat training course and an infantry officer course. Between 2017 and 2018, he served as commander of the rookie course in the Paratroopers' Training Center, and then studied at the Inter-Services Command and Staff College.
In 2019, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and appointed commander of Battalion 890, a position in which he served until 2021 - when he was appointed company commander of the fire brigade.
Following the shooting attack on the Israel-Egypt border in June 2023, the commander of the Paran Brigade was removed and Shemer was called to replace him - with a promotion to the rank of colonel.
Shemer will replace the current brigade commander, Col. Avinoam Emunah, who refused to extend his service in the brigade.
The Hasmonean Brigade is currently encountering difficulties recruiting Haredim, due to the ban imposed by the Elders of Israel on enlistment in the IDF. In the last enlistment cycle, only about 50 soldiers were recruited, less than half of the planned target.
