White House spokesman Sean Spicer apologized Wednesday night for saying last night at a briefing for reporters on Syria that "even Hitler didn't use chemical weapons.".

In an interview with CNN, Spicer said: "I mistakenly used an inappropriate and insensitive comparison to the Holocaust. There is no comparison. I deeply apologize for that. I should have stayed focused on these atrocities and tragedies (in Syria) and not made an inappropriate and insensitive comparison to the Holocaust.".

Spicer emphasized: "In no way was I trying to downplay the horrors of the Holocaust. I was trying to emphasize the tactic of using airplanes to drop chemical weapons on population centers. Any attack on innocent people is something that should be condemned, something that is unforgivable.".

Yesterday, a storm arose when, during his daily briefing, Spicer attacked the support that Russia provides to the Assad regime, even after the chemical massacre: "We had a man as despicable as Hitler, and even he didn't stoop to the low of using chemical weapons.".

MK Dr. Nachman Shai of the Zionist Camp tweeted: "Spicer, the White House spokesman, urgently needs a history teacher. Hitler used chemical weapons on a scale that humanity did not know and we hope will never know.".

Minister Yisrael Katz tweeted about the apology on his Twitter account: "This is important for historical truth and the memory of six million Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust.".
