Rabbi Eliezer Berland, leader of the Breslov Hasidic community "Shuvo Banim", is expected to be released from prison on Sunday for an urgent surgery at a hospital in Israel, Yaki Adamkar revealed on Walla.
Rabbi Berland filed a petition through attorney Rotem Tovol, and it was conducted behind closed doors. As a result, details about his medical condition or the hospital where he will be hospitalized are prohibited from being published. This is apparently also due to fear that his followers will create a commotion around him or try to smuggle him out.
According to the report, the medical procedure for 79-year-old Rabbi Berland is expected to last at least a week - from preparing him for surgery to recovering from it.
However, no exact date has been set for when the rabbi will return to prison, and his return depends on his release from the hospital.
The Prison Service will accompany the rabbi throughout this period with increased force.
Rabbi Berland was sentenced to 18 months in prison for serious crimes. He pleaded guilty to two offenses as part of a plea bargain. Part of his sentence was deducted from the months of imprisonment he served in South Africa, before his extradition to Israel.
