The chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, MK Yuli Edelstein, met today (Sunday) with representatives of the ultra-Orthodox parties, who made it clear at the end of the meeting that as long as a law is not placed on the Knesset table, the voting boycott will continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the meeting, Edelstein presented a "draft of principles" for the conscription law. The Haredi representatives reacted with frustration and harsh criticism of the coalition leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""Only general principles were presented, not a ready-made law," a senior Haredi official told Channel 7 after the meeting. "The crisis continues because we did not see what we were promised - a complete law ready for a vote, but only pages of general principles. And we already saw this three weeks ago, during the discussion on the vote to dissolve the Knesset.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Haredi parties emphasized that the boycott of the votes will continue. "We were promised a law that is on the committee's table, not principles or general guidelines - but a full text of the law. If there is no final text on the committee's table tomorrow - the Haredi parties will not vote with the coalition tomorrow in the Knesset plenary debates.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The threat comes at a particularly sensitive time, with only a few weeks left until the end of the current Knesset session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Haredi representatives demand that the legislation be completed within three weeks, while fully adhering to the principles agreed upon with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kan News reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's flight to Washington was delayed this evening following the threat by the ultra-Orthodox parties to boycott the Knesset plenary tomorrow. As a result, the chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, MK Yuli Edelstein, was asked to immediately present a preliminary draft of the main points of the conscription law to the Shas representative.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the report, Aryeh Deri demanded that Netanyahu present a draft of the conscription law today - or "tomorrow we will defeat the government bills in a vote in the Knesset." Netanyahu turned to Edelstein, who told the prime minister that the draft would be ready "in just two days." To this, Netanyahu replied: "Can't you show them (the ultra-Orthodox) a draft?"\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Netanyahu and Edelstein agreed that a draft of the agreement would indeed be presented to Shas' representative, former minister Ariel Atias, but Edelstein made it clear to the prime minister that he was not committed to the draft that was presented and that the final text would be submitted "in the next two days.". <\/p>\n\n\n\n
