In a complex maritime rescue operation that took place this morning (Thursday), 16 Israeli citizens - including ten infants and children - were rescued from a vessel that had become stuck in the middle of the sea due to engine failure, about 25 miles west of the port of Sidon in Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The yacht left Cyprus in the morning, and about five hours after the start of the voyage, it ran aground near the port of Sidon in Lebanon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the afternoon, Navy soldiers were called to rescue the Israelis, and in a complex sea rescue operation, they returned them to the Haifa port. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event was managed and coordinated by the Maritime Search and Rescue Center (RCC) of the Shipping and Ports Authority at the Ministry of Transportation, which operated in coordination with the Israeli Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vessel, which flew a Cypriot flag and sailed from Cyprus towards Israel, carried 16 Israelis and two Cypriot crew members on board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After a distress call was transmitted to the RCC center, all necessary assistance elements were immediately activated. The Navy sent a Navy ship to the area, which acted according to the center's instructions and transported the Israeli sailors safely to the port of Haifa, while the vessel itself was prepared for towing back to Cyprus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RCC (Rescue Coordination Center) - the maritime control tower - operates within the Shipping and Ports Authority of the Ministry of Transportation, and serves as a 24-hour maritime search and rescue center. The center operates advanced communication systems, which enable real-time tracking of vessels at sea, similar to an air traffic control tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The center coordinates all relevant emergency agencies, and works to ensure a rapid and professional response to any maritime emergency scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
