A heated debate developed today (Tuesday) in the Knesset plenum over transportation arrangements for the Lag BaOmer celebration in Meron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Opposition MKs attacked the Ministry of Transportation for increasing the number of trains and buses to Meron - mainly in the south of the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deputy Minister of Transportation Uri Maklev responded sharply - and clarified: "These are professional decisions intended to save lives - your public is the one who benefits from the service.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In response to a question submitted in the plenary, Deputy Minister Maklev addressed criticism of the diversion of trains and buses from southern communities to the Hilulah transportation system - and said: "This is only three hours - from a quarter to ten to a quarter to one on Thursday - during the public transportation off-peak hours, when there are an average of three hundred passengers on the train. During these hours, we provide twenty buses for free, facing a huge public that needs dozens of buses to get to Meron. Where is the similarity between these things? There are clear priorities here."\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maklev attacked the opposition members and said that the current preparations are based on the lessons of the great disaster in Meron in which 45 people died. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""There was a state investigation committee that unequivocally determined that there is a need for regulation and restriction of worshippers \u2013 and this is being done through transportation. This is also the purpose of the legislation that was made here in the Knesset. The Ministry of Transportation was required to evacuate tens of thousands of worshippers within a few hours \u2013 and this requires special preparations, including trains coming from the south, while the harm to residents is minimal."\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maklev then criticized the opposition members: "I haven't seen an urgent query about trains for football games, or when public transportation is stopped because of marathons or demonstrations. None of you asked why transportation was stopped because of a demonstration. How dare you speak when it comes to an event in which 45 people were killed. You should be ashamed of yourself for even asking.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said, "This is one of the largest state events in the country, and not a sectoral event. It is not the residents of Bnei Brak who are traveling to Meron - but the residents of Kiryat Gat, Be'er Sheva and Netivot. The arrangement includes trains that leave in the morning, shuttles to Achihud station, and overall preparations designed to ensure safe arrival and departure.". <\/p>\n\n\n\n Maklev clarified that the Ministry of Transportation is acting with great responsibility: "For a whole year, all the parties have been sitting together to prepare - and this is in accordance with the conclusions of the investigative committee. If necessary - we will add more buses.
