The Equal Rights Commission for People with Disabilities at the Ministry of Justice filed a lawsuit for 215,000 shekels against the Yochananoff supermarket chain, following complaints about not giving priority in line to customers with disabilities and other violations of the Equal Rights Law for People with Disabilities and the Service Accessibility Regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following inquiries received at the Commission's service and information center, the Commission conducted a comprehensive inspection, which included supervision at the network's headquarters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The inspection revealed that the chain does not comply with legal requirements and accessibility deficiencies were found - including: failure to provide required training to employees on accessible service, failure to appoint an accessibility coordinator, and failure to adapt evacuation and rescue procedures for people with disabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In light of these findings, a lawsuit was filed against the chain, requiring the chain to make all necessary accessibility adjustments and to compensate the complaining customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Attorney Irit Shaviv-Shani, representing the plaintiff in the lawsuit: "The commission receives many complaints about lack of accessibility and discrimination against people with disabilities. These acts and omissions contradict the accessibility provisions of the law and regulations. They also highlight the need for effective supervision and enforcement against violators of the law in general and against large employers in the economy in particular, in order to ensure equal and respectful service to the entire public.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dan Rashel, Commissioner for Equal Rights for People with Disabilities at the Ministry of Justice: "The Equal Rights for People with Disabilities Law and its regulations are intended to provide an appropriate response to the needs of people with disabilities. Violating the law is a violation of their legal right to live with independence, privacy and dignity, and a price tag must be imposed on it.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Commission for Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities has been operating since 2000, pursuant to the Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities Law and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, to which the State of Israel is a signatory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are currently about 1.7 million people with disabilities living in Israel, representing about 181% of the population. Since the outbreak of the 'Iron Swords' war, about 100,000 people with disabilities have been added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
