There is no doubt that a tremendous wave of faith has been sweeping through hearts lately. We see the breathtaking displays of faith of the kidnapped, returning from the hell in Gaza. Soldiers who were seriously injured talk about the closeness to the Creator of the world that has come upon them. Boys in public schools are setting up tefillin stands in the hallways, and even struggling with certain principals who try to prevent it, until they realize that it is hopeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chabad emissaries, who summarize the Purim activity, report an awakening that has not been matched in previous years. Hundreds of Megillah reading centers operated throughout Purim night and day, and were filled with people almost throughout the hours of activity. You see pictures of hundreds of students and teenagers with no religious background, sitting and listening to the Megillah reading in its entirety. Many say that this is their first time hearing the Megillah reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Along with the observance of the Purim mitzvah, we also saw a record turnout for the laying on of tefillin. The tefillin stands were packed, and there was almost no need to invite people to come and perform the mitzvah. People came of their own accord and stood in line to perform the mitzvah. Something is happening here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pure water<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This can be attributed to the shock that the Simchat Torah massacre caused in us last year. The monstrous evil that we witnessed, and the outbreak of anti-Semitism that is rampant in the world, made it very clear to all of us that Jewish existence cannot be understood in accepted human terms. It was precisely the horrific manifestations of hatred of Israel that provoked in us thoughts about the meaning of being Jews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But it seems that rational explanations alone are still unable to explain the great awakening that we are witnessing before our eyes. It seems that the words of the prophet, which we read in the Sabbath Haftarah, are being fulfilled in us: \"And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean\u2026. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit will I put within you\" (Ezekiel 30:25-26).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Creator of the world pours upon us a spirit of purity from on high and draws the hearts of the people to Him. Jews suddenly feel a strong desire to be more Jewish, closer to the Creator, more connected to tradition, more connected to their roots. People who in the past tended to be indifferent to matters of Judaism, suddenly become interested and want to hear, learn, preserve and do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The people are crying out: Enough!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And another thing you hear from all sides \u2013 a strong desire to stop the disputes and quarrels. The public is fed up with the hatred that turns our lives into an arena of constant strife. It is clear to everyone that there are no real reasons for mutual slander, and that if desired, all differences of opinion can be resolved through respectful dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wasn't this Haman's claim, that the Jewish people were "scattered and separated," divided and torn within themselves, and therefore could be harmed? But in the moment of truth, the people of Israel knew how to unite, and also perpetuated unity in the special commandments of Purim \u2013 "sending manna to his neighbor and gifts to the poor," commandments that express the brotherhood among us and the elimination of class differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is what the entire people of Israel are asking for now \u2013 unity of hearts and a connection to their roots. Eventually, even politicians and media figures will realize that this is the will of the people and will have to align themselves with it.
