The synagogue hall in Derbent was set on fire and the synagogue of the local Jewish community was completely burned down. 18 people were killed in the attack, including 15 police officers - two of whom were guarding the synagogue in Makhachkala. Russia reports that civilians held in the church in Derbent have been released. The synagogue in the city of Makhachkala, the capital of the republic, was also set on fire, but local firefighters managed to bring the fire under control. In the city of Makhachkala, armed men fired at a police checkpoint and killed police officers. Footage from Russia shows the synagogue in Derbent going up in flames after being set on fire. The city is home to a small Jewish community of about a thousand people. No Jews or Israelis were known to have been injured in the incident. The synagogue was empty of worshippers.\r\n\r\n \r\n
