Like all members of the "Agudat Heichal" community, devout Christians from southern Germany to which he belonged, Steller believed that the approach of redemption would only occur through life and productive work in the Holy Land. Like the rest of his friends, he was exiled with his family to Egypt during World War I, returned to the country in 1921, experienced years of abundance and prosperity under the British Mandate, and at the outbreak of World War II, like all members of the Templar sect, was declared an enemy subject and expelled from the country. After World War II, Shteller played a central role in negotiating the sale of Sarona land to the Tel Aviv municipality, and in December 1947, the soldiers of the "Mishmar Ha'am" were housed in the house. In 2005, as part of an extraordinary plan to preserve 36 of the colony's houses, five of them (including Shteller's house) were moved from their original location in a complex engineering operation, in order to widen Kaplan Street. Anyone who wanders through the house, whose address is now Eliezer Kaplan 22, cannot help but marvel at the murals that were masterfully restored by restorer Shai Farkash, the staircases, the railings, and the wrought-iron balcony. This is, if you will, a glimpse into the history of the Templars, the turbulent history of the place, and in fact, the history of the Jewish settlement in the land from the end of the 19th century onwards. The house of another family member, Emanuel Shteller, at 6 Avraham Albert Mendler Street, now houses TwentyFourSeven, another clothing and accessories store. There is an Irish pub in the basement. "Emanuel's granddaughter, who came on a roots journey in Israel, was very moved here," says Yossi Goldberg, a guide and tour guide at the Tel Aviv Center for Understanding Tel Aviv, who researches the city's history as part of an organized tour he leads on behalf of the Tel Aviv Center for Understanding Tel Aviv. Goldberg was involved in the preservation of the complex and served as the deputy curator of the visitors' center, which is located in one of the historic buildings, at 14 Albert Mendler Street. If you're there, don't miss the restored Kibler family washing oven, made by Benny Shmot, which was dismantled and moved to the visitors' center courtyard. "As part of the restoration and preservation processes," says Goldberg, "we contacted the descendants of the Sarona Templars, whose ancestors were exiled by the English to Germany and Australia during World War II, and we used as much material as possible that they agreed to lend us. Incidentally, the origin of the name Sarona is a mistake in its foundation. The Templars, who thought they were in Sharon, searched the Bible in its German translation, and found Saron. Thus, Deutsche Kolonie Sarona was founded. In June 1872, the old community house was dedicated here, which served as a place for ceremonies and meetings, and also as a school for the colony's children. A clock and a system of bells were placed at its top, which were activated to signal the lunch break. In 2005, during preparations for its relocation, the clock's original and sophisticated mechanism was discovered in the attic. In the new community house, built in 1911 on the other side of the street, after the establishment of the state, a restaurant for the district officials operated (it was David Ben-Gurion who, during the War of Independence, decided to change the name of the compound to "Karia"), which later became the dining room for the district officers. In 2005, this building was also moved to allow for the expansion of Kaplan Street and the construction of the entrance to the transportation tunnel that would pass under the entire compound. Today, it houses an Adidas store. Is this how world fame passes, or perhaps begins? The Sarona compound is intended to preserve this special Templar colony, which in the days before the establishment of the state became a symbol of the armed struggle against British rule, and the Israeli government headquarters that was located here. It is a kind of urban open-air museum of architectural gems and pieces of history and business - from a 19th-century oil press, which is a combination of a cafe-museum-living room-dining room and a place selling olive oils produced by Kibbutz Magal, to the Swivon House, which has a selection of hamsots, special corks and various cute swivons, to the temple of the super designer Tommy Hilfiger, which recently opened with fanfare. The shoe brand store Shufra (where Christian Kibler's house was located) is worth entering to be impressed by the blue stripe that adorns the wall and is painted with a mixture of laundry blue and milk (as a sticky element), after all, it was the Templars who laid the foundations for the Israeli dairy industry. A perfume bar (in simple terms, a perfume shop) will also open in the complex soon, and in October, the Sarona Market is scheduled to open in the area beneath the three Gindi towers being built in a flurry on the western border of the colony, offering food and beverage stands of a design and level we've never seen before. If it weren't for the Protective Edge War in Gaza, the Sarona complex, one of the more ambitious urban projects we knew about, would have become the hot topic of the summer of 2014, and I wish it would still happen. The management company, by the way, is careful to call Sarona a settlement. Tel Avivians, who hate "complexes," leave them to the residents of the periphery. Either way, it's fun to walk here and soak up stories and history on the tours offered there. It's also nice to just wander around, to get some fresh air. According to an optimistic vision, this up-to-date and sparkling food, shopping and entertainment center will be visited by about 25,000 people every day: in the morning and afternoon - employees of nearby offices; in the afternoon - families with children; at night - partygoers. The value of the complex is estimated at 436 million shekels, the value of the parking lot that will be built underneath is another 94 million, and the total value of the project, when completed and occupied, is estimated at about 530 million shekels. The rents in the complex are probably the highest in the city, ranging from 400 to 450 shekels per square meter per month. The million-dollar question, so to speak, is how many of the businesses will manage to survive and thrive under these conditions. The Tel Aviv Municipality sees Sarona as the main eastern gateway to the city, a place of content that everyone will want to visit, a complex of urban importance, a central link in a major business center where real estate transactions worth hundreds of millions of shekels are made, and a kind of mini-Central Park, which will cover an area of \u200b\u200babout forty dunams. According to the municipal master plan, when the army vacates the complex on the northern side of Kaplan Street, the commercial axis will stretch north to the courthouse and the Tel Aviv Museum. Some of the Templar houses on the "North Bank" will also be preserved, and it is possible that in light of the criticism of the excessive commercialization of the project so far, the "North Bank" will perhaps offer a different mix. Either way, the municipality hopes that the Sarona project will dramatically change the urban pulse of the city.
