After statements from various sources pointed an accusing finger at Chabad, the movement is publishing a &quot;statement&quot; this evening (Monday) alongside facts, as presented by Lazarov.\r\n\r\n<strong>Haredim 10 presents them with minor omissions:<\/strong>\r\n\r\n\u2022 The person in question, known to us at the time as 'Elijah Halivah,' bounced between Jewish institutions on campus, joining Hillel, AEPi, and Chabad\u2014for occasional Shabbat meals. \u2022 He was not a regular member of our community. \u2022 \"Elijah' met the bride in question on a Jewish online dating site, and presented himself as completely observant. When the woman asked us, we told her that he was not a regular member and that I did not believe he was completely observant. \u2022 They approached a rabbi from Lakewood to officiate the wedding\u2014and he was the one who was tasked with verifying the couple\u2019s Jewish status\u2014the 'Jewish verification' process\u2014and wrote the ketubah. \u2022 When we asked about Halivah\u2019s Jewish status, we told the rabbi that we did not know about it, and that whoever had to do the 'Jewish verification' would have to verify it. \u2022 The wedding itself was performed by the rabbi\u2019s son, also a Sephardic rabbi. Since I was in New York for other reasons, and at the request of the Temple rabbi and his wife, I joined For the wedding. \u2022 Since the groom had no close family, out of compassion and at the request of the temple rabbi, I led him to the chuppah. \u2022 I was asked by the rabbi to sign the ketubah and I did so with the understanding that the rabbi who conducts the kiddushin has done his research, to confirm the groom&#039;s Jewish status.\r\n\r\n<strong>In an official response, on behalf of Rabbi Yosef Lazarov, it was stated:<\/strong>\r\n\r\nFor the past 15 years - since 2007 - I have served as the director of the Chabad House and the Lubavitcher Rebbe&#039;s emissary to Texas A&amp;M University in College Station, Texas. At the Raher Jewish Center, we host students of all genders and types who visit the university&#039;s gates, including permanent and temporary academic staff, and help them get closer to a life of Torah and mitzvot, and connect with Jewish heritage. About three years ago, in 2018, a young man with a Middle Eastern appearance who went by the name &quot;Eliyahu Haliba&quot; began appearing around campus, and he tried to integrate himself into the activities of the local Jewish organizations, Chabad, Hillel, and AEPI. (He even managed to serve for a short time as the &#039;president&#039; of one of the branches of a local Jewish organization). He would occasionally come to eat at our Shabbat meals, and almost never participated in the services or Torah classes that we regularly offer. He had never studied in a yeshiva affiliated with the Chabad Lubavitch movement, either in the US or elsewhere. He did not speak Hebrew or read Hebrew fluently, except for a few syllables that he had been able to acquire during his life and travels. Last year, during the era of the Corona pandemic when the campus was shut down, he began a virtual acquaintance with a girl from the Syrian community in Brooklyn, on a dating site designed for meetings of young Jewish men and women. He presented himself in his profile as a Torah-observant Jew, and as the relationship deepened, the girl turned To us to examine and wonder about our relationship. My wife and I responded that, based on what we saw on the few times he came to Shabbat meals or to prayer, his lifestyle did not reflect the life of a religious Jew who was observant of Torah and mitzvot, to say the least. As we are committed to the foundations of Torah and Halacha, and the spirit of Chabad Hasidism, which is as strict as it is gentle, a rabbi who is about to arrange a Kiddushin for a Jewish couple must thoroughly ascertain the Jewish identity of the bride and groom before agreeing to sanctify the couple. The rabbi must ascertain that both are single - or eligible to remarry after a halakhic divorce, widowhood, etc. - and that their Jewish identity is kosher to begin with, in order for them to be able to marry each other. Accordingly, when the rabbi - a respected Syrian rabbi in Lakewood, New Jersey - asked us if &#039;Elijah&#039; was Jewish, we expressly informed him that we did not know and that whoever is consecrating the couple will have to make proper inquiries and will have to independently confirm his Jewish status. We were not involved in this case, neither in the arrangement of the consecration, nor in the preparations for the wedding, nor in any halakhic step required in preparing for the wedding. Our presence, as seen in the photos or video clips, was in response to a friendly request from Mrs. Sarah Zafarani, the wife of the rabbi from the consecration order, and this was on the assumption - which unfortunately turns out to be erroneous - that as supervising rabbis, the father and son did their examination to confirm and verify the Jewish status of the groom. The family members The bride, contacted Rabbi Ezra Zafarni of Lakewood, New Jersey, to arrange the Kiddushin for the couple. He even prepared the ketubah, but apparently due to his inability to be present, he appointed his son Rabbi David Zafarni to be the actual Kiddushin officiator. A few days before the wedding, the father of the bride-to-be contacted me and asked me about the groom&#039;s Jewish status. I replied that I did not know, and that it was the duty of the rabbi of the Kiddushin to find out before he went to marry the couple. As mentioned, at the request of Sarah Zafarni, who explained that the groom had no relatives or friends in New York, and they were at a loss as to who would lead him to the wedding, we agreed to be the ones to walk with him to the wedding - since we were supposed to be in New York that Sunday anyway, because of attending a seminar for Chabad Shluchi on campus that was taking place in the city that weekend - on the assumption that his Jewish status had been previously approved and verified, and we signed the ketubah that The rabbi wrote. In the weeks following the wedding, it became clear that the bride was aware that &#039;Elijah&#039; was using a false name, information he hid from others when he learned of her Muslim name. Due to suspicions by the bride and her family, they discovered that it was a fraud and a forgery of identity, and that &#039;Elijah&#039; was nothing more than a young Muslim of Shiite origin who had come to the United States from Lebanon. &quot;It is clear that we were misled about his identity. We are deeply saddened by this terrible revelation, and its meaning for the lives of the bride and her family.
