A person says to himself: What power do I have to change the world? I am only one person. What significance does one of my actions or inactions have? It is a drop in the ocean.<\/p>\r\n
The Lubavitcher Rebbe used to quote in this context the words of Maimonides, which states that every person should see himself and the entire world before his eyes, placed on a scale, and the scales are equal.<\/p>\r\n
Now every good deed, even the smallest, weighs the entire world in the balance of power.<\/p>\r\n
The Rebbe conveyed this sense of responsibility to everyone who came into contact with him - in personal meetings, in letters, at large gatherings. The recognition that there is great value in each and every person and in every deed and action. That through one deed, salvation can be brought to the entire world.<\/p>\r\n
The world was created for me.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n One way to internalize this perception is by thinking - what would happen if everyone did like me? This way of thinking suddenly sheds a different light on the significance of an individual's actions or inactions.<\/p>\r\n When I throw trash on the ground in the public park, it may be a single bag of snacks, but I will understand the significance of this act when I think about what would happen if everyone did like me and threw trash in the park. Wouldn't the place look like a dump?.<\/p>\r\n Or when I abstain from voting, thinking that my single ballot, one of millions of ballots, is of no importance. But if everyone who believes in the same values \u200b\u200bI advocate does as I do and does not come to vote - the result is clear, and I would really not want it.<\/p>\r\n Likewise, parents who do not vaccinate their children know full well what would happen if all parents did the same. They would not want to expose their children to the terrible diseases that afflicted children before vaccines were invented.<\/p>\r\n But they tell themselves: The majority is getting vaccinated, so we can afford to avoid it. And therein lies the fallacy, because a person is always required to think about what would happen if everyone behaved like him.<\/p>\r\n The Sages instructed man to think that "the world was created for me." They did not intend to turn each of us into a megalomaniac who is certain that the entire world was created to inflate his ego... The meaning of this article is to instill in us a sense of responsibility and obligation. Not to say: He will do it, he will clean up, he will arrange. No, I will do it, because everything depends on me.<\/p>\r\n To be leaders<\/strong><\/p>\r\n The Rebbe instilled this recognition in very broad circles. The late Rabbi Dr. Jonathan Sachs, Chief Rabbi of Britain, defined it in a succinct sentence: "The Rebbe did not seek to create Hasidim; he sought to create leaders." He wanted each and every one to feel that responsibility rests on their shoulders, and that it is their job to lead, to act, to initiate, and to bring about change.<\/p>\r\n We must internalize this commitment within ourselves and educate our children in its light. To feel the significance of each of our actions. Not to think that someone else will do what is needed, but to take the initiative and do it ourselves.
