Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon with the remains of rockets launched from the Gaza Strip towards Israeli cities in recent days at the beginning of their meeting. These are the remains of rockets that were fired in recent days. Among the remains were two rockets, one a 122 mm rocket - which has a range of 20 km (Grad) and the other a rocket with a range of 40 km (Shei 40). \""I appreciate the fact that you came here and took the time to see what we presented to you. I think it is clear that Israel is doing what any other country would do if terrorists were firing rockets at its cities and towns \u2013 hundreds of rockets, day after day, week after week. In addition, as I showed you, Hamas has dug bomb tunnels under hospitals, mosques, schools, residential buildings, in order to infiltrate our territory and kidnap and murder Israelis.<\/p>\r\n
\u00a0No country could sit idly by in the face of such criminal terrorism. Every country would exercise its natural and legitimate right to self-defense as we do and would act decisively to remove the threat from its citizens. That is what Israel is doing. We did not ask for this escalation, Mr. Secretary-General. We accepted the Egyptian initiative for a ceasefire. I do not need to remind you that this is an initiative that was supported by the UN, the Arab League, the US and Europe. Hamas rejected it. We accepted the humanitarian ceasefire that the UN proposed afterwards. Hamas rejected it. We accepted the humanitarian ceasefire requested by the Red Cross in Sajaiya. Hamas rejected it twice. I think the international community should take a clear position. It should hold Hamas accountable for its consistent refusal to ceasefire initiatives and its decision to prolong the conflict. The international community must hold Hamas accountable for its escalating and indiscriminate attacks on Israeli civilians. And the international community must hold Hamas accountable for its use of Palestinian civilians as human shields and for deliberately exposing them to harm.<\/p>\r\n
\u00a0Mr. Secretary-General, we have made every effort and will continue to make every effort to avoid harming civilians. We are seeking to hit Hamas terror targets, we have shown you these targets, which are located inside civilian areas, in mosques, hospitals, agricultural schools. Hamas people are operating from there with the aim of causing casualties among civilians because they know that we will have to protect our civilians, that we will have to act against these targets. In doing so, they are committing a double war crime: they are seeking to harm our civilians while hiding behind their own civilians. And they want \u2013 I repeat \u2013 they want to see more and more civilian casualties, while we are making every effort to avoid harming civilians. I think that the residents of Gaza, and the world understands this very well, are the victims of the brutal Hamas regime. It is holding them hostage and hiding behind them.<\/p>\r\n
\u00a0You know, Mr. Secretary-General, that the international community pressured us to provide concrete to Gaza to build schools, hospitals, housing. We are now seeing what happened to those concrete shipments. They were used to dig tunnels near kindergartens. Not to build kindergartens, but to dig a tunnel that penetrates our territory so that Hamas could bomb our kindergartens and murder our children. For a long time, they have taken advantage of our willingness to provide basic conditions for the population. They are using them to continue shooting at us. We have even set up a field hospital, Mr. Secretary-General, to help the citizens of Gaza, while Hamas is preventing the citizens of Gaza from reaching our hospital. I believe you understand that. I believe you understand that it is the right of every country to defend itself. Israel will continue to do what it must do to defend its citizens.<\/p>\r\n
