The 'member' card in Beit Shemesh, which identifies community members as those who are not connected in any way to the 'harms of technology', proves to what extent the city's ultra-Orthodox residents live in a 'bubble', completely disconnected from what is really happening below the surface.<\/p>\r\n
The "Hever" revolution, which seeks to undermine the legitimacy of the Internet and social networks among the Haredi public in all its shades and factions, raises questions about whether the campaign leaders and idea thinkers are taking into account what many signatories of the campaign leaflets whisper a moment after signing: joining is only to avoid social ostracism, but there is no real desire or thought to throw away the iPhone, or burn it with great ceremony and pomp.<\/p>\r\n
These voices are so visible and loud that they give the feeling that the public leaders and the "Friend" Project captains know and hear what we all know but choose to prefer the ostrich method of saying, "I heard, but we'll continue the campaign anyway.".<\/p>\r\n
One thing the campaign organizers managed to achieve, it must be said: the "Hever" project, which was implemented last week with great pomp and a sweeping dance on the streets of a city, is nothing less than a genius move that comes towards the working public and those who wander around for their work on WhatsApp and email networks, when in fact it gives them the feeling that they are 'ours' even if they have all the latest gadgets.<\/p>\r\n
And who wouldn't want to be an organic part of this "ours"? Who wouldn't want their children to attend Hasidic schools and the elitist environment?<\/p>\r\n
Take a long-term view<\/p>\r\n
The 'Hever' project requires signing a draconian document containing clauses guaranteeing disconnection from the Internet, which will be backed up by the signature of the city rabbi or the Hasidic community, so that if, God forbid, rumors and gossip about any member of the community regarding the possession of a hacked device despite his signature, it will be possible to immediately contact the rabbi and ask for clarification of the rumors.<\/p>\r\n
But, similar to the "kosher cell phone" revolution, it seems that here too the entrepreneurs did not think about the long term. In the story of the telephones, the activists aggressively closed all the options, including the text messaging option, causing the people of Shlomino to migrate to WhatsApp (at least then. Today it is hard to believe that this was prevented). A more gradual action by those activists would have allowed working people to purchase filtered smartphones, each with the appropriate level of filtering, as required by the workplace, which would have prevented the current situation in which large parts of the Haredi public own a device that is kosher for the educational institution, and a device that is not kosher for everyday use.<\/p>\r\n
The story of the 'Friend' project is different in this respect. When you go down to the field at the individual level and ask people quietly what they say about the project and whether they are going to enforce the clauses they signed, the initial answer without hesitation is: "I wish I could, unfortunately not." This answer is usually accompanied by a small clarification: "Of course I will obey in public, but under the pillow and within the walls of my home, I will continue to behave as before.".<\/p>\r\n
The inclusion of all communities in Beit Shemesh, including the most devout ones, in the "Hever" project, without distinction, from the history of Aaron and the people of Jerusalem to the more Zionist ones such as Belza and Wiznitz, is a kind of success, and a tattoo of the legitimacy of openly owning smartphones.<\/p>\r\n
\u00a0And yet it is hard to believe that the project will succeed in hermetically and safely cutting off the penetration of progress and the Internet into the protected space of Beit Shemesh. To eliminate the Internet reception in the pocket and the many unfiltered Wi-Fi antennas throughout Beit Shemesh - something much smarter and more innovative is needed.
