Deadly incident on the Israel-Syria border:<\/b>\u00a0Muhammad Karakara, a 15-year-old boy from the village of Araba in the Western Galilee, joined his father's workday on the first day of the holiday - and was killed, as a result of an explosion that occurred this (Sunday) morning, near a vehicle in which Ministry of Defense contractor workers were traveling, who were working near the border fence in the Tel Hezka area. Muhammad's father was seriously injured.<\/p>\r\n
The IDF estimates that this was a deliberate attack. A security source told the media that the assessment is that this was a deliberate attack against Ministry of Defense personnel, and that it was a missile that was aimed directly at the contractor's employees.<\/p>\r\n
A military helicopter evacuated the seriously injured father to Rambam Hospital in Haifa. Three additional workers were slightly injured and were transferred by MDA and the IDF to Ziv Hospital in Safed and to Rambam.<\/p>\r\n
One of the two injured, Shlomi Hazan from Beit Shean, spoke about the first moments after the explosion. "I felt like my whole car was flying, I unbuckled my seatbelt and ran out of the car in very severe pain.".<\/p>\r\n
An initial investigation indicates that this was most likely a mortar shell that hit near the vehicle, but the possibility that it was an anti-tank missile is being examined. Another, less likely, possibility is that the attack was the result of an improvised explosive device that was placed at the scene.<\/p>\r\n
Large IDF forces were deployed to the scene, including an Air Force combat helicopter that is assisting in the searches, to rule out the possibility that terrorists have infiltrated Israeli territory.<\/p>\r\n
Syrian media outlets report that the IDF is responding with tank fire and artillery fire at Syrian targets.<\/p>\r\n
The identity of the shooters is still unclear, although this is an area controlled by the rebels \u2013 which reduces the chance that Hezbollah fighters or President Bashar Assad's army are behind the attack.<\/p>\r\n
Syrian opposition organizations reported that the errant missile may have come from Assad's forces. According to them, Assad regime forces in the country shelled targets close to the Israeli border, hence the difficult result on the Israeli side.<\/p>\r\n
At the beginning of the month, rockets were fired from Syria into the northern Golan Heights. A battery of the Iron Dome air defense system stationed in the north was activated, but the interception attempt was unsuccessful. Following the firing, a fire broke out in the Alonei Bashan area.<\/p>\r\n
In March, four IDF soldiers were injured, one seriously and three lightly, as a result of an explosive device detonating on the border fence. In response to the incident, IDF forces opened artillery fire at terrorist targets in Syria.<\/p>\r\n
