I was a little girl at the time, only 3 years old. I went shopping with my mother downtown.<\/p>\r\n
And here before me, no less, no more, a little nigger!<\/p>\r\n
Until that day I had never encountered a Negro. For me it was a huge thrill.<\/p>\r\n
One of the books I loved to hear the most in those days was about the little Negro.<\/p>\r\n
It was a song we sang without ceasing:<\/p>\r\n
\""I was once, I was once in Yemen, there I saw, there I saw, a little Negro.".<\/p>\r\n
Seeing a Negro in my eyes was an experience that was impossible to understand.<\/p>\r\n
The image of the little Negro in the book was stuck in my head, and I never dreamed that I could see this image in reality.<\/p>\r\n
And there, unbelievably, a little Negro, just like in the book, stood before him. I let go of Mom's hand, and before she could notice, I ran toward the Negro.<\/p>\r\n
\""Where are you running to?" she called after me.<\/p>\r\n
\""Here's the little nigger," I called out joyfully, and before he even understood what I wanted to do, I hugged him with both hands.<\/p>\r\n

I was reminded of this act now, when I heard about compensation for an Ethiopian worker nicknamed "Black.".<\/p>\r\n
I was also reminded of this story a few weeks ago, when the court ruled that a young waitress had to pay an Ethiopian couple who she called "niggers" - an extremely high amount.<\/p>\r\n
Maybe I remained innocent, as a 3-year-old child, but even today I don't understand how a word that is not vulgar and does not prove malice can be legally abolished? (Like the word: "Nazi").<\/p>\r\n
Instead of abolishing the word - we should, after so many years, in which we established a country and brought into it people of all colors and all kinds - glorify the word, elevate it, and instill it in our heads, by explaining to our children that there are no different people, and it doesn't matter if their skin is whiter than white, or blacker than brown.<\/p>\r\n
A small child innocently absorbs everything we instill in him and grows into these insights.<\/p>\r\n
Years have passed since "Negro" or "black" was synonymous with evil and power, and only we can decide whether to return to the days when they were humiliated, or to live in today's times and change the distorted view.<\/p>\r\n

The ban on using derogatory nicknames is not related to skin color.<\/p>\r\n
If a person hurts and insults another, it doesn't matter if he calls him "black" and threatens him, or calls him "white" - and he will break his wheel.<\/p>\r\n
But if he doesn't hurt and doesn't intend to offend - then what if he called him "black"?<\/p>\r\n
That young waitress didn't mean to offend. She wrote the word "Negroes" on the bill to make a mark for herself and remember which table was theirs.<\/p>\r\n
She didn't even dream of insulting or offending. I'm sure she would have just as easily written "Americans" on the page if English speakers were sitting in their places; or "Haredi" if they were Haredi people.<\/p>\r\n
On the other hand, if someone insults an Ethiopian, speaks badly of him, calls him derogatory nicknames, belittles him, and otherwise devalues \u200b\u200bhim, even if he does not call him names such as "Negro" or "Black", he deserves condemnation and punishment.<\/p>\r\n
In my opinion, there is a difference between "Nazi" and "black." We missed when we caused a comparison between these two words. We lost when we banned the mention of both words in one law.<\/p>\r\n
We made the black or dark color 'less valuable' which is exactly the opposite of what we wanted.<\/p>\r\n
Instead of teaching ourselves and our children that the one who humiliates and insults is the loser, we have taught ourselves and our children to hide skin color, erase it, prohibit its use, because it is what shames and humiliates.<\/p>\r\n
