{"id":30620,"date":"2014-06-05T13:46:46","date_gmt":"2014-06-05T10:46:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/?p=30620"},"modified":"2025-08-05T15:41:30","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T12:41:30","slug":"30620","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/en\/news\/30620\/","title":{"rendered":"The reporter from the Haredi daily quoting from Walla"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Who is copying, me?<\/strong> On Saturday morning, I accompany my friend Avraham Sheia to one of the kiddushim that he bothers to attend frequently, when this time he promises to introduce me to one of the most senior Yated Ne&#039;eman writers.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was the beginning of my journey in the world of media, and I was happy to accept the offer to get to know the reporter, whom I knew about like many others, because he used to copy entire sections of his articles from the Walla News website, using the &#039;copy-paste&#039; method, without even trying to hide this not-so-impressive fact.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The kiddush went well, the herring, the kugel, and the typical sermons were performed as usual, and then Avraham Sheia introduced me to the senior reporter: Meet me, Eliezer, etc. He writes for Ynet Judaism. What do you think of his writing?<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The reporter shrugged and said: &quot;I don&#039;t know, I don&#039;t surf sites that have been banned by the great men of Israel. I have no idea.&quot; I looked for a hint of laughter on his face, some kind of cynicism, sarcasm, or a wink, but I didn&#039;t find it. He was terribly serious. His face was hard.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">I wasn&#039;t angry. I believed I could manage without the knowledge of the senior reporter from the leading newspaper, Yated Ne&#039;eman. What bothered me was that the man was most likely aware of the fact that his pattern of plagiarism, using the &#039;copy-and-paste&#039; method from secular websites, was known to everyone, including me, an Internet journalist. Despite this, the man chose to confidently declare that he did not surf &#039;secular websites.&#039; Why did he do this? Who did he actually choose to lie to? Me? Avraham Shia? Unfortunately, I understand today that he probably chose to deceive himself.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The singing technician.<\/strong> When you invite a secular computer technician to do your home repair, it&#039;s a good idea to check if he has any Haredi friends. I internalized this basic premise when I met one of these people this week who was invited to the home of one of the greatest rabbis [of the first rank, and please don&#039;t try to guess] and was surprised to discover one of the most advanced Internet computing systems in the world. The man was surprised, but I explained to him that it is possible, and perhaps even obvious, that the man himself does not use the system, and that it is necessary for him or his people, for positive needs.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">This rabbi is one of the greatest warriors against the &quot;disaster of the Internet&quot; and he forbids his listeners from using it in particularly harsh words.\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">None of the rabbi&#039;s fans, followers, or believers were even able to imagine that such a reality was possible.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Didn&#039;t he think that a day would come when his people, just like me, would discover the modern system in his home? Doesn&#039;t he fear this day, which could be a break in faith, a theological collapse, for quite a few of his students? Who is he deceiving? Unfortunately, I understand today that he probably chose to deceive himself.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Different values, different worlds.<\/strong> Avishai Ben-Haim, in a three-part documentary, attempts to trace the roots of &#039;ultra-Orthodox autonomy&#039; through a look at education, budgets, Torah study, and child marriage in the Haredi family. And they, it turns out, are completely different from those of general society. Why are they different? The answer seems to appear in the fifth minute of the third chapter:<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Different values.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">'&#039;From the age of zero,&#039; says Ben Haim, with excellent and fair guidance by the way, &#039;the Haredi have worked to build the love of Torah study as a supreme value and to burn it as the sweetest possible experience, this experience accompanies him for decades afterwards.&#039; In other words, what is important to the secular does not necessarily receive the same dramatic value for the Haredi. The Haredi activist Motka Blei is standing in front of a wall engraved with the names of those who fell at the Herzliya Gymnasium, when minutes before this he had rightly admitted to the principal, Dr. Degani, that his students did not say &#039;Shema Yisrael&#039; that day. When Aviva, the division&#039;s &#039;Bible coordinator&#039;, is introduced to him, he sarcastically asks &#039;Which Bible&#039;? This intonation of Blei is a defining moment in the series. The Haredi Bible is not the secular Bible. Period. Nor is the standard of living, education, equality of burden, conduct in society, not even children&#039;s games.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In contrast to Dr. Benny Brown, a true expert on Haredi society who was interviewed in the series, the longest-running episode featured Prof. Omer Moav, who, while displaying a condescending disdain for the Haredi, revealed relatively little knowledge of their inner world. For example, he wondered why apartments in Modi&#039;in Illit were cheaper than apartments in Modi&#039;in City. Conclusion: The Haredi live at the expense of the state. Well, really. Professor.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Clown in the Knesset<\/strong>. Uri Orbach, the satirist who became a not-so-important minister thanks to a correct bet, expressed concern in Makor Rishon that the Haredim might not vote for Rivlin and choose another candidate who does not have &#039;sufficient affinity with Israel&#039;s heritage.&#039;.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">So it&#039;s true that Rivlin, unlike Fuad and Yoni Shtavun, voted in favor of criminal sanctions for yeshiva students, causing a rift in the Haredi community, but what does that really matter?
