Will a rabbi be elected for the city of Jerusalem in the end? As things stand now, that day is still far away. The election process is proceeding sluggishly, and every week more and more delays and postponements arise.<\/p>\r\n
At the council meeting held at the end of March, the various factions were asked to submit their list of representatives in the electorate, but the Haredi factions refused - claiming that an election committee had not yet been established, and hence that this was an improper procedure, since representatives in the electorate cannot be appointed without an election committee to oversee the process.<\/p>\r\n
Even at the last council meeting at the end of April, the names of the representatives were not submitted. Following this, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Rabbi Eli Ben Dahan informed Mayor Nir Barkat that if the Haredi factions did not submit their representatives soon, he would appoint representatives on his behalf. The list of representatives was supposed to be submitted at the council meeting held last Thursday, but the step was again postponed, even though the elections committee had already been established.<\/p>\r\n
Our request to the Jerusalem Municipality in an attempt to understand what the mayor and the Minister of Religious Affairs intend to do in this regard, and when the ultra-Orthodox representatives will be appointed, received no response.<\/p>\r\n
A senior official in the Haredi factions tells the Haredim10 that they will try to "blow up" time and delay the selection process as much as possible, with the goal of reaching two Haredi rabbis.<\/p>\r\n

A senior religious Zionist source involved in the details tells Haredim10 that Barkat is committed to one Haredi rabbi, and that although there is a possibility of electing two rabbis from religious Zionism, due to the majority they have in the electorate, Barkat is not prepared for this, and is working to close a "deal" with Shas for a Haredi Sephardic chief rabbi.<\/p>\r\n
Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Rabbinate Elections Committee was supposed to convene for the first time this week, after months of delays and postponements, but at the last minute, Mayor Barkat announced that he and the municipality's representative on the committee would not attend, citing scheduling constraints following Jerusalem Day.<\/p>\r\n
Haredim10 learned that the committee members had requested to meet without the mayor, but Rabbi Abuhatsira, a member of the committee, informed his members that he would not allow a decision on elections to be passed during the month of Elul. Without Rabbi Abuhatsira, there are only two other members, so there was no point in convening the committee.<\/p>\r\n
The new date for the committee's meeting has been set for the 16th of Sivan (June 16), in the hope that the members will attend this committee.<\/p>\r\n
The committee is expected to set the election date, which, given the current state of affairs, will likely be postponed from the date originally planned for mid-Elul.
