Following the announcement of the strike, the Elad Municipality began taking action to minimize harm to passengers.<\/p>\r\n
In a meeting held between Elad Mayor Israel Parosh and his deputy - Transportation Portfolio Holder Shmuel Grossbard, it was agreed that all means must be taken to minimize the harm to passengers, mainly due to the uniqueness of the city of Elad, in that, unlike other cities, it does not have a train station or taxi service, and almost all transportation is operated by the 'Egged Taavura'.<\/p>\r\n
Because of this, a meeting was held to develop a plan for different activities during the strike, with the goal of successfully transporting as many passengers as possible. The meeting was attended by, among others, Mayor and Deputy Mayor Rabbi Shmuel Grossbard, the management of the Elad branch of "Egged Ta'avura" and the MNS Eli Shemesh, Customer Relations Coordinator Rabbi Meir Jacobs, and some of the drivers at the Elad branch - who do not wish to harm passengers, despite the heavy pressure exerted on them by the committee.<\/p>\r\n
At the conclusion of the meeting, a plan was decided that would allow passengers to be transported to places where they have the option of connecting to additional destinations, as well as shortening the route in Bnei Brak, to allow buses and drivers who are already working to make more trips in less time. The logic behind this plan, explains Deputy Mayor Rabbi Shmuel Grossbard, is to give people the opportunity to leave the city and arrive there, on routes as short as possible, in order to allow the fraction of drivers who are not striking to make as many trips as possible, with these routes bringing passengers to places where there is available transportation to all the usual destinations operating in Elad and closed due to the strike.<\/p>\r\n
The "Egged Taavura" also says that if it is possible to expand the service beyond this, it will of course be expanded, with updates being provided throughout the day at the company's information center *3133.<\/p>\r\n
According to the workers, the strike began after management refused to reach agreements with the workers after six months of negotiations on a new collective agreement, hence the planned strike.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The workers, who are organized under the organization "Power of Workers," explained that Egged management informed them that if the state does not participate in the 100% expected wage increase to a rate of 39 shekels per hour, from the current wage of 32.6 shekels per hour, the company will reduce the wage increases currently offered.<\/p>\r\n The employees also note that the company is limiting wage increases and reducing its expenses on driver salaries in the new agreement.<\/p>\r\n Itzik Kashkash, chairman of the workers' committee, said: "The drivers are not willing to have the additional benefits be 'on the back burner', and are demanding that the company dig deeper into its pockets and commit to providing minimal additional benefits to drivers. The benefits in question are: advancing the contributions to the training fund from four years to two and a half years, increasing compensation for working in split shifts, and increasing the premium for performing the work and for quality work.
