The letter will be offered for sale at the Kedem auction house in Jerusalem early next month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">The letter reads: &quot;The people of Karta, and the entire Haredi community, &quot;live a twentieth-century life here&quot; (that&#039;s your language) just like you, in every sense - biological or sociological - that can be attributed to &#039;life.&#039;&quot;. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">They are born and give birth, and they raise and educate their children; the percentage of morbidity and mortality among them, as well as their average lifespan, is the same as that of the public you call &#039;modern&#039;; they exist within the framework of the same economic regime, and even the percentage of parasites living at the expense of their public institutions is no greater - and perhaps even smaller - than the percentage who live on unemployment benefits from state funds, as in any modern industrial society. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">They may be more content with their lives than many of those you call &#039;modern.&#039; But their way of life is different from yours, and with naivety \u2013 bordering on impudence \u2013 you simply state that your way of life is the human norm and that they deviate from it. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">You are unable to understand that in their eyes their way of life is normal, and you are the deviant. Objectively, the difference between you is only that you belong to the majority, while they are a minority \u2013 and this says nothing about any difference intellectually or morally...&quot;.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">This position is extremely surprising since it originated from a scientist who was deeply rooted in academia and rationalism. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Moreover, Leibowitz is known for his stance on the Haredim, such as his famous quote: &quot;I am not sure that this sect is the continuation of the historical Jewish people. It is something that grew and is growing out of the historical Jewish people, but I think, if this sect exists at all, that it is something completely different.&quot;.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> The situation is even more puzzling, as the Haredim hated Leibowitz, about whom one of the rabbis said: &quot;Leibovitz, with his great knowledge, is the only Jew alive today to whom the sage title of Epicurus can be applied without a doubt.&quot;.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/p8503-170-25285.s170.upress.link\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/kl1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-168685\" alt=\"\u05dc\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05d1\u05d9\u05e5\" src=\"https:\/\/p8503-170-25285.s170.upress.link\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/kl1-660x684c.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Professor Yeshayahu Leibowitz (1902-1994) was not only a scientist and intellectual, but also one of the most important Jewish thinkers of the 20th century and a sharp and outspoken political and social critic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">For decades, Leibowitz engaged in research and teaching at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the fields of science and the humanities, chemistry and neurophysiology, history and philosophy of science. <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">However, he made sure to leave the realm of academia and address the general public, and was, among other things, a popular lecturer in the &quot;University Broadcast&quot; series on Galei Tzahal. His appeal to the general public is also evident in the fact that he frequently responded to letters sent to him. Leibowitz answered most of the letters in detail, and in them he formulated a much more delicate style than was evident in his articles and lectures.
