A few personal words, before I bring my impressions from there, on Monday evening.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">I grew up as a child in Be&#039;er Sheva. I studied at Haidar Tiphrach. I was accepted into Haidar after being personally examined by the late Rabbi Shach at his home. The reason: Rabbi Shach had instructed that children who lived in Be&#039;er Sheva not be admitted to Haidar Tiphrach. My parents, who wanted me to be educated at Haidar, understood that the key to my acceptance lay with Rabbi Shach.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">And so, on the 17th of Tammuz, my father took me to Bnei Brak, on a trip that began at 10 a.m. When we arrived in Bnei Brak, it was already minutes before the fast ended. We waited in the stairwell. There was a table, a bench that was not easy to fall on, and a brick door.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">The person who opened the door for us said that he came in right after Rabbi Schach finished the fast-breaking meal. My father told me: The person who opened the door is the man who serves as Rabbi Schach&#039;s security guard. His name is Rabbi Eshaik.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">We were ushered into the room minutes after Rabbi Schach broke his fast. The house had a hall at the entrance. To the left was a small kitchenette with yeshiva utensils, blue plastic. Opposite the entrance were two rooms. One on the right. Rabbi Schach sat on my left, next to the table.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">After a conversation with my father, and a few questions with me, Rabbi Schach called the director of Haidar in Tfarach, Rabbi Levinson, and informed him that from today they are accepting children from Be&#039;er Sheva to Haidar.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">\u2022<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">I didn&#039;t get to see the yeshiva. Even though my father encouraged me throughout the trip and told me about the Beit Midrash, about Rabbi Kahneman who poured water on the concrete roof in the middle of the night so that the casting wouldn&#039;t break, we were in a hurry to get back to Beer Sheva. It was late and my father was afraid of missing the bus.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">Since then, Ponevezh has been the most exalted thing in the yeshiva world in our opinion.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">At Haidar Tifrah, a friend named Isser Ben Menachem studied with me. He was the grandson of Rabbi Schach or his great-grandson. The stories he told about the yeshiva always captivated us, our eyes sparkled. We all knew he was close to the royal family. A few years later, a boy from Bnei Brak came to Haidar. He said he lived on Sonnenfeld Street, but every Shabbat he went up to study at the Ponevezh Yeshiva with his father, and there he saw Rabbi Schach sitting and studying next to the Holy Ark, which was made entirely of gold.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">And the imagination once again hovered over the splendor of the yeshiva.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">At the age of 17, for the first time in my life, a rabbi from Kiryat Sefer, a member of the family of the late Rabbi Michal Yehuda Lefkowitz, zt&quot;l, took me on a tour of Bnei Brak. I, who studied in Jerusalem, did not know what Bnei Brak looked like. He decided to take me on a tour of the homes of the great rabbis. We arrived at my grandfather, Rabbi Michal Yehuda, saw the etrog tree, and then arrived at the home of the Grail Steinman and the Grail Karlitz.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">Finally, I went with him to the Ponivez yeshiva. It was the first time I had ever set foot in a yeshiva.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">I was moved. I stood transfixed. The furniture was old and only the Holy Ark, which he told me had been brought from Italy, stood overlooking everything. The noise of the study struck me with an indescribable force. I saw the rabbis sitting in the east. I asked about Rabbi Schach, and I was told that he only leaves his house once every few months, as he is ill.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">\u2022<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">The second time I was at the Yeshiva Hall was on the day of Rabbi Shach&#039;s passing. I came from Ashdod, where I lived. I arrived significantly late for the hurried funeral procession, which was held on Friday.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">When I reached the steps leading to the yeshiva hall, the policeman guarding the steps there recognized me. He allowed me to enter.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">I arrived at the Beit Midrash. Hundreds of young men were standing and crying. I didn&#039;t know anyone. Suddenly, one of the young men from the yeshiva, a former Be&#039;er Sheva named Arhala Weinberger, recognized me and pulled me into the inner circle, next to Rabbi Schach&#039;s bed.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">In front of me stood the overseer, Rabbi Dan Segal, crying. Next to me stood another friend, Avraham Yeshaya Kosovsky. Above me stood the journalist Avishai Ben Chaim. I think he took a picture. To the side, on Rabbi Schach&#039;s chair, were placed his books with a soul candle.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">The funeral procession began. The overseer, Rabbi Dan Segal, stopped and asked who had been baptized. When he confirmed that I had also been baptized, we held on to the bed and went down the stairs to the right of the Beit Midrash - to the funeral procession.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">\u2022<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">The third time I came to the Yeshiva Hall was when I came to photograph, a few years later, the hall was full.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">I arrived, took pictures, and became aware of a terrible controversy that was spreading everywhere. Don&#039;t take pictures of them, don&#039;t take pictures here, go away, don&#039;t take pictures from here, come another time when it&#039;s full, so they can see that there are many of us - these were the instructions that little guys fired in my direction.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">And I didn&#039;t take any pictures and I didn&#039;t come back.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">It hurt me how the glory that was in my eyes turned to ashes.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Last night I arrived to take pictures, after it became clear to me that peace had been promised to return to the yeshiva. Until I saw that everything was calm, I didn&#039;t take out my camera. I didn&#039;t come to take pictures of any side. The Torah is one in my eyes, and there is no sign on the boys that they belong to.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">Evening prayer began with the entrance of the Gaon Rabbi Baruch Dov Porbarsky. I had already considered bringing my camera in following the chants rising from the Beit Midrash. But when everything calmed down and everyone heard &quot;Bless the Blessed One&quot; from their lips, I realized that maybe, maybe someday peace would return here.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">Ponevezh was the mother of yeshiva in my eyes, and that&#039;s how I would like everyone to remember her, recognize her, and know her.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1898.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-135783\" alt=\"IMG_1898\" src=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1898.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u05de\u05e6\u05dc\u05de\u05d4 \u05e2\u05d5\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d5\u05e7\" src=\"http:\/\/d3d529uskukcrm.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/%D7%94%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%93.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" \/>\u00a0I raised my camera to take a picture of the Beit Midrash, and a guy jumped up and hid the lens with his hands. &quot;Don&#039;t take a picture,&quot; he told me, &quot;you&#039;ll probably just write &#039;about them.&#039;&quot; And I didn&#039;t even answer him. I don&#039;t know who he is and who &#039;they&#039; are.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1902.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-135784\" alt=\"IMG_1902\" src=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1902.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u05de\u05e6\u05dc\u05de\u05d4 \u05e2\u05d5\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d5\u05e7\" src=\"http:\/\/d3d529uskukcrm.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/%D7%94%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%93.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" \/>\u00a0A moving image. Dozens of young men stand silently, in their places. No one moves. Only in the aisles is there movement. Everyone seems to be waiting to pray. .<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-135785\" style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" alt=\"\u05d9\u05e9\u05d9\u05d1\u05ea \u05e4\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05d1\u05d6 \" src=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1910.jpg\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u05de\u05e6\u05dc\u05de\u05d4 \u05e2\u05d5\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d5\u05e7\" src=\"http:\/\/d3d529uskukcrm.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/%D7%94%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%93.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" \/>\u00a0The cantor is wrapping himself in a tallit. I try to focus on him, and another guy comes up and pushes me: &quot;Don&#039;t take a picture of the cantor.&quot; I don&#039;t exactly understand what the problem is, but I don&#039;t argue. I smile to myself and look for something to take a picture of.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1908.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-135794\" alt=\"\u05d9\u05e9\u05d9\u05d1\u05ea \u05e4\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05d1\u05d6 \" src=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1908.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u05de\u05e6\u05dc\u05de\u05d4 \u05e2\u05d5\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d5\u05e7\" src=\"http:\/\/d3d529uskukcrm.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/%D7%94%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%93.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" \/>\u00a0Inside the Beit Midrash, dozens of cameras are pulled out. People are taking pictures from everywhere. I try to understand why I, in particular, am not allowed to take pictures. &quot;You are the media, you will blaspheme God,&quot; they tell me.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1919.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-135786\" alt=\"\u05d9\u05e9\u05d9\u05d1\u05ea \u05e4\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05d1\u05d6 \" src=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1919.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u05de\u05e6\u05dc\u05de\u05d4 \u05e2\u05d5\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d5\u05e7\" src=\"http:\/\/d3d529uskukcrm.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/%D7%94%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%93.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" \/>\u00a0Evening prayer begins. Everyone responds in unison, &quot;Bless the blessed God,&quot; no one raises their voice. And this cold peace, I wish it would freeze here forever.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1911.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-135795\" alt=\"\u05d9\u05e9\u05d9\u05d1\u05ea \u05e4\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05d1\u05d6 \" src=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1911.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u05de\u05e6\u05dc\u05de\u05d4 \u05e2\u05d5\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d5\u05e7\" src=\"http:\/\/d3d529uskukcrm.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/%D7%94%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%93.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" \/>\u00a0Hundreds of young men. No one stands up, no one raises their eyes. Evening prayer with a burning fire of holiness. Suddenly I feel the feeling I felt when I arrived at the yeshiva hall for the first time in my life.<\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1927.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-135796\" alt=\"\u05d9\u05e9\u05d9\u05d1\u05ea \u05e4\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05d1\u05d6 \" src=\"https:\/\/ch10.co.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/IMG_1927.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\r\n<p dir=\"RTL\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\u05de\u05e6\u05dc\u05de\u05d4 \u05e2\u05d5\u05e9\u05d9\u05dd \u05e9\u05d5\u05e7\" src=\"http:\/\/d3d529uskukcrm.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/%D7%94%D7%95%D7%A8%D7%93.png\" width=\"14\" height=\"14\" \/>\u00a0The Garav Porevsky raises his hand to cover his eyes as he chants &quot;Shema Yisrael.&quot; For a second he does not raise his eyes towards the boys. Silence, a silence that can be seen. A guy from the side explained to me: &quot;So that they don&#039;t see it in the pictures and the name of God is not blasphemed.&quot; I was sorry that the head of the yeshiva doesn&#039;t have the name of God written on their foreheads. I took the last picture diagonally. If you don&#039;t wake up here, the feeling is that the crooked ship will sink.
