MKs Ariel Atias, Moshe Gafni and Meir Porush, the three ultra-Orthodox Knesset members who were members of the Shaked Committee, will meet today (Tuesday) at noon with Defense Minister Bogy Ya'alon.<\/p>\r\n

This meeting was preceded by a coordination meeting held last Friday, in the office of Shas Chairman MK Aryeh Deri in the Rehavia neighborhood, in which MK Yaakov Litzman of United Torah Judaism also participated, to coordinate positions. The meeting with the Defense Minister will be held in his office in Kirya in Tel Aviv, at 2:30 PM.<\/p>\r\n

The estimates are that the meeting itself will not generate headlines and will be "noise-free." From the perspective of the ultra-Orthodox Knesset members, it would have been better if it had been held without prior announcement, perhaps without any announcement at all, but when it comes to five MKs, the way to silence them is pretty unlikely.<\/p>\r\n

The purpose of the meeting is to clarify what the red lines are from the perspective of Torah scholars in all matters related to the recruitment of yeshiva students and reporting to the recruitment offices.<\/p>\r\n

After all, Torah students won't really go to prison. The law talks about targets and not quotas, which is good for the Haredi public. As for the defense minister's worldview, the same source makes it clear that in his opinion "everyone should serve, including the Haredim." According to the same senior official, this is an "open wound in Israeli society," and this wound should be opened carefully, not by extremism, not by incitement against the Haredi. Subsequently, feverish consultations were held in the homes of the Great Rabbis of Israel and the Rebbes, as well as in the home of the Grail Shteinman, who, it is no secret, is awaiting his decision on what to order.<\/p>\r\n

So far, all Lithuanian rebbes and yeshiva heads have instructed to act as the Grail ordered - to report for the first order, but not to sign any paper for a future commitment. The exceptions were the Grash Auerbach, who instructed his students not to do so, and the Rebbe from Vizhnitz, who spoke out about a week ago against reporting to the recruitment offices.<\/p>\r\n

As for the Rebbe of Slonim, rumors spread that he was instructing his followers not to report for the first order. The rumors were denied and it was clarified that until the Grail Shteinman expressed his opinion on the matter, the Rebbe had not made any decision either.<\/p>\r\n

A joint meeting of all the councils of Torah scholars, Hasidic-Lithuanian-Sephardic, is planned later to reach a final decision.<\/p>\r\n

In preparation for that yeshiva, hectic meetings are held with top military officials to ensure that no red lines are crossed, and that there is no fear of spoiling the yeshiva students when they report for their first order.<\/p>\r\n

Let us recall that in the past, medical tests were a significant stumbling block, but a few months ago the problem was resolved and the army agreed that every young man could bring test results from his family doctor.<\/p>\r\n
