What's up with computers?<\/p>\r\n
There's a girl sitting across from me. She's talented, she has charisma, and strong opinions about the world and her wife.<\/p>\r\n
We already had a preliminary conversation about preferences, we examined skills and abilities, we mapped occupational inclinations, we pointed out strengths. We also talked about values \u200b\u200band what would do her really well at work. In short, we dug. Deep.<\/p>\r\n
Then, when the map was quite organized and a clear tendency in two directions began to emerge, I saw it coming.<\/p>\r\n
- What about high-tech, actually? she asks.<\/p>\r\n
I look up at her and my heart sinks. Oh, no.<\/p>\r\n
- What about him?<\/p>\r\n
- You make a good profit from it, right?<\/p>\r\n
- Ahh.<\/p>\r\n
- And is it easier to find a job?<\/p>\r\n
- Not always.<\/p>\r\n
- More than an occupational clinic.<\/p>\r\n
- I think so, although there is demand in this profession too, and if you are good, and you are excellent, the sky is the limit.<\/p>\r\n
I see her chewing her lips, trying to organize her own opinion on the matter. And I do the most unprofessional thing in the world and tell her (gently): Look, my dear, computers are not a natural profession for you. You don't like sitting in front of a computer, your numerical and analytical thinking is mediocre, and you are looking for a profession that will combine working with people and influence, and will give you mental satisfaction.<\/p>\r\n
She says she'll think about it, and what does she actually want? To support a Torah household. The rest isn't that important. And when she leaves, I know I've lost another one to the new gurus of the Haredi employment world - the computers.<\/p>\r\n
This is where the good salaries are (relative to other professions, this is true), this is where the urban legend of easy placement is prevalent (depending on where), and here, it's unpleasant to say, the 'prestigious' aroma also wafts. <\/span><\/p>\r\n As one mother put it in a practical way - my daughter will go study computers, because that's what guys are looking for in matchmaking today.<\/span><\/p>\r\n What percentage of the general public works in high-tech? 10 percent of all workers in the economy (including ultra-Orthodox Jews).<\/p>\r\n Among the young Haredi girls and women who are currently starting to study a profession, the numbers are, in my estimation (which is not statistically based), at least 30 percent.<\/p>\r\n What happened? What do we understand by the name "No"?<\/p>\r\n So, it's true, you can reach a good salary faster and the chances of finding a job are higher. But in the long run, the consideration of choosing a profession that suits a person's personality and inclinations wins out. Anyone who works in a profession they love will succeed in it. They may earn a little less (although it's possible to specialize and advance in any field), but they will be much happier.<\/p>\r\n \u00a0Happy? What is that anyway? Work is just a livelihood, and you'll find satisfaction at home and with the kids. That's how my advisors explain to me too many times the choice of high-tech.<\/p>\r\n And when I try to resist, they look at me with compassion \u2013 with all due respect to your profession, what do you understand?<\/p>\r\n Really what?.<\/p>\r\n The writer is a graduate of career counseling studies at Tel Aviv University.
