A group of matchmakers working in Chabad Hasidism published a letter to Chabad Hasidic followers over the weekend, presenting a new payment model - this, they claim, in light of the increasing investment in each proposal and the changing reality in the world of matchmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In their letter, the matchmakers note that "in recent years, significant changes have occurred in the world of matchmaking, as while in the past a significant portion of meetings led to a match, today the reality is different, and many meetings do not lead to the establishment of a home in Israel.". <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It should be noted that while in the past a significant portion of the acquaintances and inquiries were carried out naturally within communities and families, today a matchmaking process often requires greater investment on the part of the matchmaker: inquiries, adjustments, conversations with the parents and the matchees, accompanying the proposal, coordinating meetings, and prolonged work around each proposal - even when it ultimately does not reach a good conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the matchmakers, since "this reality involves a great deal of investment in getting to know each other, making adjustments, contacting families, and ongoing support for each proposal," and out of a desire to continue providing professional, thorough, and dedicated service, it was decided to adopt a new work model: the full matchmaking fee - currently, matchmakers demand about 8,000 NIS from the parties for a match - will be paid, as is customary, only when the match is closed "at a good and successful time," however, for meetings that took place and did not lead to a match - each party will pay 100 NIS for each meeting that took place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"If in the past, matches would be closed after 3-4 meetings, today the process has dragged on for 6-8 meetings, and often no match is created in the end. We invest many hours in accompaniment and adjustments, and the new model is designed to compensate for this.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the matchmakers, this is not a change intended to burden families, but rather a step aimed at enabling the continued dedicated and responsible engagement in the work of establishing faithful homes in Israel, out of appreciation for the time, effort, and support invested in each proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the end of the letter, the signatories express hope "that through cooperation, responsibility, and effort, we will be able to help establish faithful and happy homes in Israel.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the letter immediately caused a huge uproar: Many on social media attacked the matchmakers who signed the letter and the proposed model. "Matchmaking is not a real estate transaction, but a life building," wrote one user. "Economic considerations must not enter the meeting room and have any influence.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the harsh criticism, one matchmaker has already withdrawn her signature from the letter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
