He received his new Jewish name - Chaim - and completed an incredible family story that began underground, under the terror of the Stalinist regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story behind the covenant is told by Rabbi Levi Kaminetzky, the city rabbi and Chabad emissary in Tomsk, who accompanied Yevgeny, who became a chameleon, through the sensitive process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"&quot;It all started in 1937, at the height of the era of terror and communism in the Soviet Union,&quot; recalls Rabbi Kaminetzky. &quot;In the city of Zhytomyr in central Ukraine, a little baby named Felix was born. In those days, circumcision was a dangerous offense punishable by imprisonment or exile, and Felix&#039;s parents were terrified to death to perform the mitzvah.&quot;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Felix&#039;s grandmother had principles that would not yield to fear. She refused to accept the decree and declared: &quot;I will not have a grandson who is not circumcised, I must make a covenant with him.&quot;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One day, the grandmother took advantage of the fact that the parents were out at work and secretly invited a mohel to her house. Felix, who was then a month old, was brought into the covenant of Abraham, right under the nose of the regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The price for this brave act was not long in coming. Word of the underground alliance leaked out, and the communist authorities reacted harshly: Felix&#039;s parents were fired from their jobs immediately, an unbearable economic and social punishment at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"&quot;About 20 years ago, Felix himself told me this story with excitement,&quot; says Rabbi Kaminetzky. &quot;He knew that his grandmother gave her life and risked her family to continue the Jewish chain of generations. Felix told me that for many years his parents could not work in good jobs because of their dedication. The price was very heavy.&quot;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday, history stood still in the synagogue in Tomsk. Felix&#039;s son, Yevgeny, decided that his time had come. Despite his advanced age and natural misgivings, he asked Rabbi Levi Kaminetzky to complete what he had begun in that small room in Zhitomir in 1937.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"&quot;To see a 60-year-old man enter into the covenant in Siberia is a heart-wrenching sight,&quot; the rabbi says. &quot;Yevgeny, who came to life, proves to all of us that it is never too late to enter into the covenant of our forefather Abraham. That grandmother&#039;s determination has not disappeared; she was just waiting for the right moment to erupt again with her grandson. This is the strongest answer to anyone who tried to erase Jewish identity in Russia \u2013 we are still here, proud of our heritage and our people.&quot;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the festive ceremony, when the cry was heard, &quot;His name was called in Israel: Chaim,&quot; the excitement in the small Jewish community of Tomsk was at its peak.
