Amit Segal, Channel 12's political commentator, addressed the announcement of the ceasefire with Iran in a special column, and estimated that Netanyahu hoped to end the campaign by overthrowing the Iranian regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the title "Neither a complete victory nor a strategic defeat - a significant achievement on a long road," Segal writes: "The only question is whether Iran now has the ability to pose a real threat to Israel. The answer, after 40 days of war, is - less than forty days ago.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Segal emphasizes: "In the end, Iran promised not to sign a temporary ceasefire - and it did. That the Straits of Hormuz would not open - and they are supposed to open. It vowed to also include a cessation of the war in Lebanon - and Hezbollah today claimed hundreds of lives. This is similar to a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran that would have allowed the ayatollahs to continue attacking Israel. According to him, "The image of Iranian victory, encouraged by large sections of the international media, claims this: Iran survived ten rounds against the world heavyweight champion. Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah took advantage of the draw with Israel in the Second Lebanon War in 2006 to receive a blank check from his Iranian patrons and establish a formidable axis of resistance. Segal notes that "after Operation 'Am Kalavi,' every spare rial of Iran was invested in rebuilding the ballistic missile array that was seen as the only answer to Israel. The result was a relatively quick reconstruction, but enormous public anger that was suppressed only at the cost of a massacre. Now, there is much to rebuild and much less rials: Should we buy a new navy? An air force? Invest in missiles? Rehabilitate Hezbollah, which is groaning under a heavy deficit? Or invest at home, to calm the population whose situation has only worsened? The situation of the former Iranian empire is dire, and there are no signs of improvement on the horizon.".
Segal estimates that "the (temporary?) end of the war also marks the opening of the Knesset election campaign. Netanyahu, who hoped to ride the overthrow of the regime in Iran all the way to preserving his rule in Israel, is facing a more complex task than he had hoped for when he embarked on the operation.". <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Segal, "There is a sourness in the public regarding the gap between hopes for the overthrow of the regime and the half-time result.". <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He concluded with an assessment: "For the Prime Minister, overthrowing Iran in the coming months is a mission of paramount importance, also for his political survival.
