<\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Shulamit suffers from Rett syndrome, a neurological developmental disorder that almost exclusively affects girls. In the first months of her life, she developed normally, and suddenly, around the age of one and a half, her parents, Miri, 36, and Arie, 38, noticed that something was changing. A captivating smile disappeared, words stopped, eye contact faded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""We thought it was autism," Miri tells Haredim 10. "We ran from test to test until we arrived at a diagnosis of Rett syndrome. These girls are trapped inside. They understand, they feel, but they can't express themselves.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are called "angels of silence." And like an angel, Shulamit also copes quietly, while her parents fight for her nonstop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The house that revolves entirely around Shulamit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nFrom the moment Shulamit returns from daycare until she falls asleep, the entire house revolves around her movements and emotions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""It's 24\/7," says Miri. "We are constantly on guard. Her sleep is light, and she wakes up at night. We built a special bed for her, so she doesn't get out and hurt herself." Every room is customized. Every object is carefully chosen. Every brother and sister in the family system are recruited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shulamit has an older brother and two sisters. The children, little heroes in their own right, learn from a young age to take care of their sister. "It educates them to be exceptionally sensitive," says Aryeh. "But their world has been truly shaken.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Miri works at Yad Vashem as a museum group guide and interviews Holocaust survivors. Aryeh is a blessing. But all the titles, all the roles, pale in comparison to parental responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The only voice that pierces the silence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nShulamit has very few things in the world that calm her down when she's upset. One of them is music. And most of all, the voice of singer and songwriter Naftali Kempe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""When Shulamit hears 'Return of Shulamit' or 'Drive Out the Sadness,'" says Miri, "she immediately calms down, like magic. It's simply amazing because nothing else can comfort her. It's as if these songs were written for her.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A week ago, the family's small dream turned into a big moment, and an exciting meeting was held between Shulamit and Naftali Kempa, at their home in Kiryat Yearim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""When we told her Naftali was coming," says Miri. "Her eyes lit up. She made eye contact with us and smiled. She was really waiting for him. It's something we hardly see every day. You saw how the music speaks for her. It was a really huge event in her life, she's still digesting it and gets excited when we talk to her about it.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n <\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\nNaftali himself was equally moved: "When I heard that there were songs that captured Shulamit, it really moved me. When I started singing and saw her open up... I felt that the music was managing to break through the walls a little. But that's not enough. Shulamit and the Rat girls need to be given real hope. The state must take responsibility. I wish it could still call you mother.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The new drug that gives hope - but not in Israel<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThere is already an innovative drug in the world that is able to dramatically improve the quality of life of girls with Rett syndrome. It is very expensive and has not yet entered the Israeli drug basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Miri stated firmly: "I don't believe in sitting and crying. We live with it as best we know how. But in an era where there is finally a cure for these girls, there is no longer any justification for letting Shulamit continue to cope alone in a body that doesn't listen to her. This is her chance! We know girls around the world who have received the cure and are showing amazing improvement. They are able to express themselves more, to be present. Shulamit deserves a real chance.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Aryeh added: "We have heard from families who received the medicine through private insurance about unbelievable improvement. It is not possible that only those who can afford it will get to see their daughter open up to the world. Our girls all deserve the opportunity to get out of the inner prison they live in. This cannot be a privilege only for those with means.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finding hope and building it with your own hands<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nDespite everything, Miri's optimism is almost unquestionable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""I believe that this challenge came to us for a reason," she says. "And we want to give Shulamit a good life. That's all. For her and 200 other RAT girls in Israel and their families \u2013 thousands of people whose lives have been turned upside down. We are here to fight for them.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""Shulamith is connected to the song 'Return Shulamith'; so am I. She is an amazing girl who one day simply withdrew from us into a silent world of her own. This song expresses my deepest hope, ours - that this girl will return to the world she can and wants to take part in; that she will return fully to us.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Between the tears, the faith, the grinding routine, and the subtle humor that sustains the family, it is clear that Shulamit's story is much more than a story about illness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
