The Jewish joke tells of two collectors in a synagogue who were at odds with each other. On the night of Rosh Chodesh, one announced, "He will come up and come." The other immediately jumped up and shouted, "He will not come up and come.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We see the realization of this joke in one of the painful phenomena of our public life \u2013 the loss of the ability to agree on anything. A situation has been created in which every proposal, initiative or reform receives an immediate political label, and from that moment its fate is sealed: if it comes from one side \u2013 the other side must oppose. Not because of its content, but because of the assumption that has taken root that it is forbidden in any way to give credit to the initiator of the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Politics, originally intended to enable agreed-upon management of public affairs, has become a tool that produces the exact opposite \u2013 a built-in disagreement. Time and again we see that positions are determined not by what is right, just, or beneficial to the public, but by who is saying the things. And so, instead of factual inquiry, we receive automatic opposition. Instead of a discourse that seeks solutions, we are mired in a struggle that seeks to fold our hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The main thing is to resist.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n All sides of the political spectrum have spoken out over the years about the need to reform the judicial system and regulate relations between the authorities. Everyone understands that the current situation is intolerable and creates a judicial dictatorship. But even after hundreds of hours of discussions, it was not possible to reach agreements, because one side believed that it had to thwart any compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same phenomenon was in the struggle for the release of the kidnapped. If the government led a partial deal - they defied it by saying that a comprehensive deal was needed; and when it went for a comprehensive deal - the protest organizations reversed the message in the blink of an eye and shouted 'partial deal'. Because this became a basic premise - we must oppose everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We also see the same pattern in the issue of the draft law. Those who submitted a bill in the previous government are now standing and screaming at the top of their lungs that that very law is a 'disaster.' They are not willing to agree to any arrangement that would allow yeshiva students to study Torah and at the same time recruit thousands of Haredim who are not studying, into frameworks adapted to their lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They supposedly want equality of burden and relief for reserve personnel, but they achieve the opposite result. And does anyone imagine that not regulating the status of Torah students will encourage conscription? Will the situation in which every yeshiva student studying Torah in the Jewish state becomes a criminal and is subject to arrest create an influx of young Haredi men into the army? Not a single sane person believes so. <\/p>\n\n\n\n So why resist? Because that's how it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Laban vs. Jacob<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is not just a political phenomenon. The discourse has become more aggressive, suspicion is growing, and solidarity - that sense of 'togetherness' that is the source of the strength and resilience of the people of Israel - is increasingly eroding. Instead of seeing us all as co-destined, we see an adversary whose hand must be bent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In this week's parsha we read about Laban the Aramean, whose way was exactly this - to break the agreements and repeatedly change the rules, as Jacob said to him: "And you shall exchange my wages for ten shekels."
