Yeshiva head Rabbi Meir Zvi Bergman spoke harshly to one of those involved in the decree on the conscription of yeshiva students, in light of rumors about the temptations that the IDF is using to recruit young Haredi youth - and to narrow the steps of yeshiva students.

There is a fast track to getting the money you deserve and there is a regular track: which one do you choose?

The head of the yeshiva said: "I always tell this story, that when I studied at the Lomza yeshiva. During this period, there were underground fighters. And they would come to the yeshiva and constantly convince the young men, who had come out to defend the inhabitants of the Land of Israel. They would say that this was a temporary order and that the Gemara should be closed, etc., it was very difficult to deal with them, they would sit next to you and they wouldn't let go. It was difficult to study.

"Anyway, at that time, members of the underground entered the yeshiva's head, the late Rabbi Reuven Katz, the author of the 'Degel Reuven', to demand that he let the boys go with them - and he did not agree in any way. In response, they pointed a gun at him and threatened him. Rabbi Reuven Katz opened his shirt and told them: If you want, you can shoot me..."

The yeshiva head continued: "What I want to tell you about this is that this story happened 80 years ago, and it is very strongly imprinted on me, and the reason is because I saw in my yeshiva head the dedication. I saw how he gave his soul over the Torah. This is what the young men need to see and hear.

"Every Torah scholar, every Rosh Yeshivah, and every father, needs to educate and talk about this. Constantly educate about this: that it is forbidden to go to the army, that anyone who goes there is a martyr. An ultra-Orthodox person has already left there, and we must give our lives for this."

"And we need to talk about this all the time and educate the boys about it. Only then will we be able to say, 'Our hands did not shed the blood.' They - the boys - need to feel that we are not compromising on this."
