United Torah Judaism Chairman Yitzhak Goldknopf joins the criticism leveled by his advisor Motti Babchik at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the conscription law crisis.
In an interview with Makor Rishon's political correspondent Akiva Weiss, which will be published this week in the Yoman supplement, Goldknopf clarifies: The Haredi parties will go with anyone who can meet their demands.
Regarding religious Zionism, the Gur Hasidic MK said: "Their pain will be with them and our pain will be with us. Don't bring me your pain and pass it on to me. Let's decide that everyone has their own package."
One of the editors at the newspaper where I work, 44 years old and a father of five, is going into reserve next week until after the holidays, leaving home and everything. Do you understand the pain?" The former minister was asked.
Goldknopf: "I don't understand, I didn't decide he should leave. If this person decided this was his path and he wants to leave, then he leaves."
Isn't this a war of commandments?
Goldknopf: "I was told there are 100,000 evasors in Tel Aviv, in the Dan bloc."
On sending the warrants and the fear of arrests: "I do not suggest to anyone to arrest yeshiva students. This would cause a shock in the people of Israel and the entire world. I do not suggest to anyone in the State of Israel to act in these ways. This is breaking all conventions and crossing a red line."
Regarding the sanctions against the Haredi public, he said: "If there is no choice and they have to leave the country - then they will leave the country. There will be a country without Haredim. The Haredim will not change their way of life because there is an army and war. There is an army, and there are also those who will go to the army. If you say you are short 50,000 soldiers, take the ones who are evading. I'm not talking about Haredim."
About Prime Minister Netanyahu, he said: "If he wanted to and would lie about it like he would about other things, there would be a conscription law. When the Prime Minister wants something, he enters the room and sits everyone around one table and reaches a compromise."
"If Netanyahu wants us next time, he will have to show actions even before the government is formed. I can't come today and say that Netanyahu promises, who among the rabbis will buy that?"
Did you close the door to Netanyahu?
Goldknopf: "I don't close or open doors. We are committed to our public, and whoever knows how to bring our public what it asks for will accept us. Whoever knows only to say and say, then let him stay with telling someone else. In the meantime, Netanyahu in this term has only said."
