Syrian media outlets are reporting today (Tuesday) that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met yesterday in Abu Dhabi with the head of the National Security Council, Tzachi Hanegbi.
Two sources confirmed to Al-Jumhuriya.net that the meeting took place.
One of the sources close to the talks emphasized that the meeting indicates substantial progress in the process, while another source noted that this was not the first meeting between the parties.
The report raises questions, because Negbi was seen yesterday, together with Prime Minister Netanyahu, at a joint dinner with US President Trump at the White House.
It is unclear whether the error in the report was in the date of the meeting, or in the identity of the Israeli senior official who allegedly met with al-Shara.
More than two weeks ago, Hanegbi revealed to MKs in a confidential discussion held in the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Security Committee that Israel is conducting direct, not just indirect, dialogue with the Syrian regime and the head of state - Ahmed al-Sharaa.
According to a report by Amir Ettinger in Israel Hayom, Hanegbi said that he himself is managing the security and political coordination. Hanegbi added that Syria and Lebanon are the countries that are candidates for establishing normalization with Israel.
In doing so, Hanegbi effectively confirmed foreign reports that Israel is conducting direct dialogue with Syria. He revealed that this is not just a dialogue between military officials, but also a direct political dialogue.
Hanegbi then told the MKs: "It was reported that the Syrian president said in a meeting with Macron that there is an indirect dialogue with Israel. The truth is that there is a direct dialogue, a daily conversation at all levels. I personally conduct it with political officials on behalf of the government. Israel and Syria have many things in common, including with Iran.".
