In a post he published, titled "The Pied Piper Who Converted Me," Grossberg shared the story of his long-standing acquaintance with Piamente - who over time became his spiritual rabbi and creative partner.
"My teacher and rabbi, the great Hasid and the sweetest man in history - Avi Piamenta passed away, leaving us shocked and in pain."
I knew my father from a young age when my father produced the Piamente Brothers' comeback shows in 2006, when Yossi, the famous guitarist, returned to Israel and I was privileged to play live with them at the Barbie Club. Yossi passed away in 2015.
My father, who will live, Mr. Shaul Grossberg, was the first producer of the Piamenta band in 1975, before they left for New York and became followers of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
All of this has not yet made me "repent."
In 2012, after I had been a Buddhist for a while and was still trying to find myself, I suddenly heard Father Piamenta's flute playing from the window of the house. I recognized it and decided to go down and find where the music was coming from.
I got dressed, combed my hair because I had a lot of hair, and found myself standing at the entrance to the Chabad house on King George Street. I said to myself, what's wrong with me and Chabad... but the music was crazy, so I went in.
Tonight was the 19th of Kislev and after the crazy show, the 'Holiday of Redemption' gathering began at the Chabad house 'from above'. I was enchanted. I stayed. I absorbed. And I have stayed to this day.
All because of the flute of my father, of blessed memory.
Later, I first arrived at the Lubavitcher Rebbe's court with my mother, who will live (a story in itself) and how I entered 770, where Avi Piamenta also appeared at the CHI Elul event... a real closing of the circle.
A few years ago, an editor from a family newspaper heard the story by chance. She called us both in and did a crazy cover story on us, including a short summary video.
From there, we produced a joint song and music video called OMG that tells our story, including numerous interviews in the press, radio, and media. We performed together across the country - and did a lot of soldiering together.
"My father, you were my teacher and I will never forget you in my life. So sad. You are finally reunited with your brother Yossi. Blessed be the true judge."
