He spoke about the difficult conditions in captivity and described a particularly chilling situation he experienced a few weeks before he was released.

""I was there 30 meters underground, with five other hostages whose families are here. A month before I was released, a commander, probably their senior, came to us, called us over and brandished a Kalashnikov - and said: 'Choose three who are going to die and three who I'm going to shoot in the knee.' They let us 'decide' who would get shot in the head and who in the knee.

""We were in this discussion for a whole hour and they scripted it. They let everyone speak and say why they should live or die.".

""After an hour, when they decided for us, they drew lots. Then they said, 'Before we shoot you, you have a chance to be spared.' Then they had to speak badly about the government so that they might live. Then they supposedly forgave us and we went back to our place. You sit and say, 'What happened here now?' You'll understand that they live there under a crazy threat," Ben Ami described.

According to him, "There are difficult conditions there, abuse, fear of dying from IDF bombings, fear that the kidnappers will take revenge because their friends or family members are killed. There is no food when the crossings are closed, the situation is very difficult.".
