Following the widespread use of the "Negison" for feeding babies in the first months of their lives, parents turned to the rabbi Moshe Mordechai Karp with the question: Is the use of this utensil permitted on Shabbat?

The 'Nagison' is a kind of pacifier with a perforated receptacle, into which crushed fruit or vegetables are placed - and thus the baby can suck on the 'Nagison' and safely extract the juice or puree from it, while the large pieces of fruit and seeds that could endanger him remain inside the 'Nagison'.

It should be noted that there are many different models of mouthguards on the market today, some of which are made of plastic, some of which are made of silicone, and some of which are made of fabric mesh.

The use of a 'Negison' on Shabbat involves many complex questions - such as: "Is it permissible to let a baby cross the Shabbat prohibition with their hands?", "Is there a Boreh prohibition in the case of the baby separating the pulp from the pieces of fruit and seeds remaining inside the 'Negison'?", "Is there a Suchat prohibition in the case of the baby sucking the juice from the pieces of fruit?", "Is there a Suchat prohibition in the case of the baby biting the Negison itself, which is made of mesh fabric?" - and other halachic questions that are too short to detail in this context.

After examining the various models of 'Negison' commonly found on the market, Rabbi Karp decided that it is permissible to use a 'Negison' made of plastic or silicone on Shabbat, even if grapes are placed inside it, which are forbidden from being squeezed on Shabbat according to the Torah. However, a 'Negison' made of cloth mesh should not be used on Shabbat at all, because when feeding, the baby squeezes the juice that has been absorbed into the cloth itself.
