The Canadian website 'Toronto Star' revealed this morning (Tuesday) that the Canadian Federal Police have opened a criminal investigation against Israeli-Canadian soldiers suspected of "crimes against humanity" during the war in Gaza.
According to a report in Israel Hayom, the revelation caused a stir in the Jewish and Israeli communities in Canada, as this is the first official government investigation - and not the initiative of private entities.
The investigation is directed at Canadian citizens suspected of involvement in "crimes against humanity" committed during their regular and reserve military service in the IDF.
The investigation reportedly began in 2024 but was only recently revealed. Possible actions being considered in the investigation include gathering evidence, sharing information with international authorities, and possibly filing charges within Canada.
The official language describes an investigation into "crimes related to the Israel-Hamas conflict," which suggests that Palestinians arriving in Canada could also be investigated. However, in keeping with the prevailing atmosphere in the country, Israel is perceived as committing war crimes in Gaza.
According to the report in Israel Hayom, an Israeli living in Canada wrote in a WhatsApp group: "It's a second before they file arrest warrants against 'war criminals.' Canadian children who were or are still in the army will be prosecuted upon their return to Canada. This is so serious, friends. There are lawyers who are already handling this. But the Gazans who came here are not being investigated.".
Unlike the investigation into war crimes in Ukraine - which included extensive publicity, dedicated websites, hotlines, media interviews, and signage at airports - the Israel-Hamas investigation is being conducted without publicity or evidence-gathering campaigns.
